I had a dream..... Ok, it's my fourth one!
-
Are you starting again??????
-
If it's your fourth dream and no layout yet, it sounds more like a nightmare !
Steve :peep:
-
Nice! Dreams are good.
Give it time and that one piece of track will become two.
Niel
-
Don't fear HO fans, I am not down sizing, a little bit of "Z" gauge fun for December.
-
I can bear witness to the layout taking shape 😃 It looks really good, and will be a nice layout for both function, operation and also just to let the trains run. The scenery also looks awesome 😃
How about some fotos Of the layout?
-
Yes we need a track plan and then lots and lots of photo's.
-
Trains and food in the form of cookies...
Excellent :thumb:

Hi there,
Here is a drawing showing what we planned and busy building.
Some short notes:
1. The layout is 3.6 x 2.0m,
2. It is a 3 layer layout,
3. Märklin (AC), HO, Digital system,
4. Depicting Germany / Switzerland in Era 3 - 5.
Cheers
-
Very nice indeed. You build it, we'll come visit it!
-
That will look awesome.....
Let the building begin :thumb:
-
Hi there,
From the design stage to making lots of dust. ;D
-
Many months later to this.
The backdrop is up. Cutting the backdrop out gave it the 3D effect. Busy considering glacier shelter in the left back corner. Will post some more.
Cheers.
-
Looking very good......
Keep them comming :thumb:
Cheers.
-
Hi there,
Some pics where we had a go at the ballast. It took ages!
The result...... ;D
See you
Cheers
-
Awesome.....
Just a suggestion. I'm not saying it is the way to do it. It is just the way I found to work and look the best.
I did my landscaping, painting, grass, glue first. Then I did the balast last.
I like the two Locos, they are awesome....
-
Thanks Evert for the tip. :thumb:
Just to remind you I have HO scale and need to be on the layout. One wrong move, well say no more....
Cheers

Hi there,
Some pics from my previous layout. Many hours on that one. :)
Cheers
-
Very, very nice :)
-
I had the privilege to see the previous layout myself and it was indeed very nice.
-
Very, very nice :)
+1 :thumb:
-
That looks like it was an impressive layout. Good Job! :thumb:
-
Thank you for the :thumb:
Very busy with the latest one, improving all the time.
More pics to follow. ;D
-
Hi there,
Some more pics to show the latest progress.
Our glacier tunnel in the making, fully removable.
The weathering will follow later.
And our fine assistant always present.
Enjoy. Cheers
-
Just be careful that your faithful assistant does not start chasing trains. :)
-
Let the faithful assistant chase a cat through the trains...
-
That will cause a derailment or two. >:D
-
Thanks guys for the comments regarding our faithful assistant. ::)
-
Hi there,
No, we did not take a break. Lots of planning and we mixed a lot of cretestone and here some pics.
Enjoy.
Cheers.
-
That is looking great. Really well done.
Personally I would re-paint the castle. That plastic always look so fake.
Keep up the good work and keep the pictures comming.....
Cheers,
Evert.
-
Looking good... :thumb:
-
Personally I would re-paint the castle. That plastic always look so fake.
Hi Evert,
Thank you for your interest. Weathering or ageing will come later. At the moment we are trying to complete the 3.6m mountain and therefore just placed the buildings. But, it will come.
Have a great day.
Cheers.
-
Oh OK Cool, can't wait......
WOW 3.6m mountain, that is a beast..... Will look very impressive.....
-
Hi Evert,
Maybe I should be more specific, 3.6 m long.
Sorry if I've mislead you. ;D
Cheers
-
Hi there,
Still very busy building, slowly. The frame and mosquito net done with one layer of paper towel and glue and water mix. Otherwise you have the cretestone on the tracks. :blech:
Not even load shedding stopped us.
Enjoy, until next time
W
-
Starting to look good.
-
Nice Werner. Makes things so much easier if you have a dedicated room for your trains.
-
Yes Ed, it is great when the wife supports you all the way. At first she suggested to put the layout in the lounge.
-
That's just bragging... ::)
-
Dear friends,
A space saving tip, should you not have a display cabinet.
Empty a bedroom cupboard hanging space and put in shelves on pull out slides.
Cut the display pine strips in a triangle and place them one behind the other and secure with screws from underneath! ;D
Place models on the pine strips.
No more dust and poking fingers. :thumb:
Cheers
-
Any updates here? :lamer:
-
Hi there,
With the last get together at our place I unfortunately have to report that we had such a great time that no photos were taken of the guys and lady present. Hmmmm, that won't happen again.
But to show that we are busy a few pics of my model building light stand that I built. You may have noticed it was made for two modellers.
And it works!
Cheers and enjoy modelling.
-
:thumb:
That is a very nice idea.
-
That's a different idea...
-
Very cool :)
-
Hi everybody,
Had an idea to put a house near the avalanche tunnel and for it looked a bit bland. so we built a little concrete foundation with steps leading to the house and put some railings around it. Lighting to follow.
Enjoy
W & C
Chiao
-
That foundation with the railings brings it up very nicely. :thumb:
Consider a outside light as well, not just the light in the building.
-
Awesome.... such small detail make such a Biiiiig difference.
Yea lights everywhere. ..... :thumb:
-
Hi everybody,
We tweaked our model a little bit and added a few Preiserlein. ;D

Hi everybody,
We started with the wiring. We're taking a breather first :D

Dear friends,
We are slowly recovering from the great feast.
Herewith Colleen's art work to show the festivity. (Oh... I made the mantel piece and restored the mirror :innocent:)

Dear friends,
Apologies for not being active on the forum. Colleen's Mom passed on two weeks ago after a long battle with cancer. Colleen was at her bedside for the last three months.
We did build a Swiss restaurant and below some pics. Remember the light stand. Its working great! :thumb:
And the progress....
The placing of the restaurant is still a secret...... ;)
There is more to come.... Small tip, a lot of hot air. ;)
Ciao

Looking good,

Dear Friends,
It's been a while since my last post, but my dear friend who visited me on the weekend encouraged me not to give up. It's been rough the last year and 9 months, but I believe I'm winning. Thanks mate :thumb: :thumb:
I will be giving you short feed-backs as a lot happened. There might even be gaps, but the pics will tell a tale.
There was a lot of mixing of cretestone and news paper balls rolled to make the moutains.
And before I forget, all the photos are back. Photo size comply ED. ;)
Until next time.
Ciao

I have to post two photos of my late Dad and brother Bernie, back in the days.
Good memories.... :thumb:
Ciao

Using the cake mixer to mix crete stone is a new one for me. ;D
:thumb:
-
Good Morning
It is really good to see you back here Werner.
LOL, my wife will not be so happy if I use her mixer for that, but great idea :thumb:
Layout is looking good and I like the pictures of your dad's layout.
Enjoy your day and hope to see some more soon.
Cheers,
Evert
-
One of the best backdrops I've ever seen. Was done by an artist. :thumb:
Good to see progress - hopefully will inspire me after the big break down and rebuild.
-
Glad you like the pics.
The cake mixer was not my idea. Please note the delicate hands of user. I was told it was going to take forever and therefore "more power!"
If I remember correctly the layout of my Dad was 4.5 x 3,5m. This picture dates 1968.
A colleague of mine who saw this layout in 1973 discussed and remembers the details of the the layout. Fond memories. :D
More news soon. 8)
Ciao
-
Hi Ed,
The backdrop was done by my Dads friend over a weekend. Onkel Alex did metal work as well.
Those were the day when you need a stoep everybody came to help.
Ciao
-
Good day all,
Herewith an update with even more cretestone and modeling.
Then I had a brilliant idea to make a hatch with......... fibre glass. Oh dear. Had to go back for more resin, hardner and cloth, but in the end it got hard. I think it took a week or so.
Golly it looks like a sail or jib or something. On that we will plant a vineyard, wine press with workers etc.
Hope you like it.
Ciao
-
Hi there,
Herewith a panoramic shot of what transpired that week. I hope this cell phone shot shows the model over the length of the room. O:-)
Chiao
-
Hi there,
Some more feed back. This time we painted.
Please believe us we used all PNA's stock to cover the crete stone. Colleen put on 6 layers of paint. I believe it was 35 degrees plus at the time we did this. :D
Hope you enjoy.
Ciao
-
Hi there,
Got to add the panoramic picture to show all of it.
Ciao
-
That is really looking GREAT Werner.
I like the hatch, very good idea, and making it from Fiberglass will keep it light and you can achieve a awesome flowing shape that will blend into the layout.
Oh wow, nice paint job Colleen, it is so awesome that you guys build together. Very cool.
Love the panoramic pictures, really give a awesome overview.
Enjoy the day and speak soon.
Cheers,
Evert
-
Well done you 2. Love it! :thumb:
Will have to visit to scrutinize at some point... :innocent:

Will have to visit to scrutinize at some point... :innocent:
I agree, a coffee and cake get together should be organized. But first
some trains need to be able to run.
-
Hi Wener!
Looks great, avesome work. Glad to see, that you can built on that layout again.
Cheers
trainmaster
-
Thank you for the nice comments. Colleen is awesome assisting and having great ideas and implemented.
I see the requisite for a get together visit is that the train(s) must run. I will be surely working on it.
Attached, with permission, a panoramic picture of Jörg's lay out, taken on the 18.02.2017.
It has since then grown in size and stature with all the gizmo's I certainly have dreams about.
Well done . You are certainly a great inspiration.
Ciao
-
Wow, that is a stunning shot.
I think you need to visit me again and take another shot like that. :thumb:
-
Very Cool shot Werner. Ja nee, the layout have changed a bit. I saw it about a week ago.
Yea Werner, we will have to make a plan for a visit :thumb:  That would be awesome.....
Cheers,
Evert
-
Hi guys,
Small update on the never ending hobby of ours. We got an electrostatic grass maker and planted grass followed with trees.
The grass part was easy. Lots of cold glue and 9V batteries to drive the electrostatic device.
Then we planted trees. Lots of trees. The sequence for each tree always the same. Drill hole, vacuum hole, hot glue, plant tree and then orientate in all directions the same. :D
We managed to plant in excess of 600 trees in the evenings. It was awesome fun. We are not finished yet with trees, but you will get the idea.
Enjoy until next time.
W&C

Just a few more pictures..........
Ciao

WOW...... That is looking awesome Werner and Coleen. Really GREAT job, I love it.....
Need to come and visit :thumb: O:-) :innocent:
Cheers,

Good day to everybody,
It's been a while, but the layout is growing.
Colleen was very busy and did the lake and I must stress Colleen did it all.
The colours came out super almost to a point I don't want to pour the resin.
The willows are still absent as we still need to do a lot with small shrubs and the catenary. In the process I am sure the Willows are not going to make it.
The catenary arrived, but that's another day.
Our guard dog is taking a nap. It's an oldie, but now there's two. Those who don't know his name is Custard and the addition is Jelly.
-
The Journey has been amazing as the next picture will show. 8)
The second picture is a panoramic and I trust the picture will say more than a thousand words. Evert, I believe that's what you want to see..
-
Our friend in Wupperthal send a small parcel and the forester can now make firewood, the normal way...
I really like this scene (second picture), but is something missing? your comments are welcome. ;)
The restaurant is finished and in it's place. Just a small bush to "hide" the cave under the guests. :innocent:
The Alphorn musicians are in place and waiting for the first song. That will come in a later update.
I hope you liked the update.
Until the next time.
W&C
-
That water looks amazing. :thumb:
What's missing with the forester, a dog lifting his leg against the stump. :)
-
Thanks for the nice comment? Colleen did a sterling job with the dam/river.
We are not done yet. Want to make a tree falling tree into the river after a beaver got hold of the tree trunk. :D
Regarding something missing in the scene, I meant this picture.... :D ;)
The Forester needs more wood around him I think. Where are my trimming shears?
Ciao

A few nudes suntanning. ;D :peep:

Got them and they are going to be :D :D added.

Awesome, Awesome Werner...... Look Stunning.
I see the doggy is also find it quite relaxing
-
Good day to all,
We decided that the layout needs a bit of Swiss flair and so we added a hot air balloon. ::)
Had fun putting this together and had to make very sure of NO glue smudges. ;)
But......
-
But, putting it up was the Big challenge.....
It did not fall down yet and the pic below shows the result.
Trust you like it.
Ciao
W & C

That is awesome...... Very Cool.....
I still want to get a n scale one for close to the castle on my layout

Hi Evert,
Thanks for the nice comment.
Does Faller have it in N scale? hmmmmm. ;)
It does bring in the third dimension.

Hi Evert, small update.
Got this lovely station to be placed on the right hand side of the layout and started adding lights, telephone booth, signaller etc you need near a station.

The end result, not fully completed.
Need time table, water fountain and baggage and a few more passengers.
Hope you like it.
Ciao
W&C

Looks good, but now a night time photo with the lights on please.
-
Awesome Werner...... Very nice Station
I should add some lights to mine in the platform. Will need to check, but I might still have some :thumb:
Did Wolfgang not have one of those on his layout too?
Regards and enjoy the weekend.
-
Hi there,
The station was a present from Wolfgang and it is placed on the layout with honour. I miss my friend very much and when looking at the station does bring back memories.
The lights will happen soon Jörg. A few more things at the station and I will post the pic.

Hi everyone, :D
Some more pics of the river Colleen built.
She did an awesome job.
The question is, should we put resin in the dam/ river ?
Your opinion please......
Ciao
W & C
-
Regarding the river - not sure, but if you are good with resin casting, go for it. Evert made it very believable.
And I love the luft balloon...
Ninety-nine red balloons
Floating in the summer sky
-
Wow, the paint work on the river is awesome, well done Colleen :thumb:
Mmmmmm, I think you should yes, It needs the gloss and the ripples on top. It just give it that little bit extra. If you unsure, do a test piece. Resin is cheap R50 for 250ml at Builders.
Cheers,
Evert
-
Any updates?
-
Hi everybody, compliments to the season, may you all have an awesome 2020.
Yes, lovely updates to share, which is coming shortly. worked so much that we forgot to take pictures.
Will upload shortly.
W & C

Good Morning
Hope 2020 will be great for you guys.
Looking forward to some pictures.
Regards,
Evert

Good evening everybody,
I was reminded to post some pics and herewith the latest ones.
It has been hot the last few weeks so the going was slow.
Remember the inspection lid we planned on the right hand side of the layout, the lid is now installed and functioning.
We used ordinary 120 degree cupboard hinges for the swing action and placed a handle on the inside.
We decided to place a vineyard on top of it.
Please note the snacks and coffee, they just kept on coming. :D The research was intense as we knew nothing about constructing a vineyard.
With the placement of the small wine tasting area overlooking the vines, (to be), we placed the uprights to hold the wires to secure the vine plants.
More to come shortly..... ;)
Cheers for now,
ColWer
-
Some more pictures.
Ciao

How can you have coffee when building a vineyard?
A glass of wine would be more appropriate. ;D
-
How can you have coffee when building a vineyard?
A glass of wine would be more appropriate. ;D
1. To insure work is up to standard = no wine (taste horrible anyway)
2. Not sure that is coffee however...
:stir: :peep:
-
Mmmmmmm, I'm with Ed :thumb: No Wine :blech:
Coffee, yes, that's good......
Enjoy and it is looking great.
We need to organize a visit again :stir:
Cheers, Evert
-
Good day to everybody,
Thank you for the nice comments. No wine and that is coffee.
Some more pictures to show more detail.
Colleen did the stone wall embankment and the end result is just awesome.
We start planting the posts and placed the 45 degree stays as well. We had to go buy more glue at our stationary shop in the Mall.
All the posts got snipped to the correct height and then the whole lot got painted with dark brown earth paint.
As you can see the Noch Grassmaster Ver 1.0 is ready to produce the grass etc.
The models in the last pic is purely for placement. We got something exciting planned for that area.
Stay tuned.
Ciao
ColWer
-
And some more pics.
We made a big discovery building the Vineyard. It takes a lonnnng time for such a small area. :D
Ciao
-
:thumb:
-
Wow...... Jip, doing the wineyard by hand is going to take a looooooong time, but at the end you can say you have built it
Looking Great. :thumb:
-
Hi there,
We are under "forced" lock down and those without a hobby well...... :'(.
In the mean time the vineyard is coming on great.
Some pictures to show the progress showing what the Noch Master Ver 1.0 can do.
The fertilizer is sawdust with brown dye colouring. That was fun to get it dry. But the stove worked great!
The steel wire to hold up the vines was a challenge. Big respect for doctors that do the close up stitches. The pulling tight and making the loop before the loop falls apart in your fingers, well that was great fun. That took an all nighter, almost. :eek2:
The close ups shows more detail. You can almost smell the horse manure.
A friend of mine took some pictures and forward them to his wife and she is still convinced he is buying a winery. :stir:
Hope you like them pics. More to come soon. :D
Best regards
ColWer

The close ups tells a story..... :D
Until next time....
Ciao

That is really starting to look fantastic.
Well done.
-
 Thanks!
-
Well done! :howzit:

More update on the making of the Vineyard......
Strip the end of twin core flex as the first picture shows and then twist the copper strands not to tight and then it gives the actual look of the vine with the twisted bark.
-
I have never done this before so my friend Mr. google helped me a lot.
I decided to make a little demo model to ensure I leave enough to "plant" said vine.
To make "hundreds" of vine trees I made myself a template to ensure rather more than to little left over after snipping to size.
Unfortunately i can't find a picture of painting the white glue onto the vine tree and plastering brown dyed sawdust onto said vine.
The drying takes you to the next day when the work really starts.
-
And don't forget the obligatory breaks with muffins and cuppuccino.
Enjoy the pics until next time I show how to make the actual vines.
Chiao
ColWer

Cappuccino and muffin looks good. ;D

Until next time....

Wow, Werner, dit lyk AWESOME !!!!!!!
Very well done, really look GREAT :thumb:
-
Lovely old picture. 52 years ago you say - I wasn't even born yet!
-
Hi there dear friends! I trust you are all well!
Now that my birthday is over, and it was a BIG number, I can show some more progress. ;) All this time available is just awesome! :innocent:
I found some Heki Decorvlies which was cut into little rectangles, are we aloud to advertise here Ed? :innocent:
And then "teased" into thinner and bigger rectangles.
A liitle bit of Bostik Gel on the copper wire and stuck onto the vine. Quiet easy but not 130 times! :D The sales lady at PNA is starting to know us very well, especially if you use lots of glue!!
Oh, and you can see the vine bark on the copper nicely! ;)
-
Oh yes before I forget.... I had to buy washing line pegs. You kinda use a lot of them. :D
Once the gel glue has set you trim off the edges and make a nice square area for the flakes to sit on and we used unscented hair spray, the extra strong one! Much cheaper than the spray-on glue.
Spray the hairspray on and then pour green flakes on the Heki Decorvlies. The green flakes we got at the Toy Show.
The flakes were a bit too big, but my Dad taught me a trick that he used when he was building his layout in the sixties. He put the flakes in my Mom's coffee grinder! :D Still got the grinder and yes it does work.
Let the flakes and glue cure say 30 minutes and can then be placed in the vineyard. I think the pics will tell the story as well!
-
Here the end result after being placed in the vineyard.
Hoped you liked it. But wait..... there's more......
Take care and stay safe!
Ciao
-
That looks awesome.
:thumb:
-
I don't want to be a nit picker, but I can't see any grapes.
Other than that minor detail, it looks really good.
Steve :innocent:
-
Hi Steve,
The grapes are ready to harvested, but then I did say, But wait.... there's more....
Ciao ;)
-
WOW Werner, dit lyk awesome...... :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Oh Werner,
You got the patiens for this miniature work...
Congrats, looks good!

To all Train Friends, I trust you had a great day.
Wish you all the best for the year!

Hi all, during the testing times and during my "working at home spell" I still found some time with the vineyard.
With this feed-back I want to show how we made the grapes. ;)
Strip and snip 5cm copper strands from the old two core flex.
Dip the one end of the single strand of copper wire into cold glue, approximately 3 - 4mm and then into a bowel of "hundreds and thousands" that was donated to me.
Yes I will return that I did not use. ;)
For the grape we tried mustard seed and it was just not small enough. Sand looked very rough and settled using the "hundreds and thousands".
We made two batches of vine grapes and lost count at 300 I believe.
The following pictures will show a bit more.
-
Finding the correct shade of green was another challenge, but we got the right shade of green.
the pic below showed the result. Painting approximately 400 bunches of grapes took soooo loooong. :o
We also made some "picked" grapes for the two trailers. A little bit of sneeze paper, cold glue and more "hundreds and thousands" did the trick.
See the pics below.
With the next feed-back We will show more progress.

Hello dear Train Friends,
Another update my friends with the vineyard.
We placed the Restaurant. Placed the Park Lanterns for illumination for after sunset. Just could not resist the gentlemen on the bench with the missus just not impressed with him reading the newspaper. >:(
Found a vintage wine press in our toolbox and could not resit to place it on the vineyard. Final placement to follow.
See pics below.
-
Here the safety railing to prevent damage to the vintage wine press.
It was a finnetjie job to glue the posts and railings together without glueing the fingers.
With the next posting I will show detail of the vineyard, grapes trailer, baskets and the people working in the vineyard.
Hope you like the pics.
Until next time.

Good day Friends,
Here an update whats happening on the layout.
Whilst the glue is setting on the right hand side I decided to try install the catenary on the left hand side.
Fortunately a good friend reminded me to buy isolators for the installation. Well they did not fit!
Until I put on my jewelers magnifying "hat" I noticed the absence of a hole.
Drilled the holes with a 0,80mm drill bit and with a bit of filing on the catenary wire the isolator slipped on.
Yes, I did not drill in to my finger this time, :D
Greetings
ColWer
-
I found it. Here the picture showing the progress with regard the catenary.
The wires in the bridge will be assembled today.
The ends need to be trimmed to length and then to be turned into a loop.
The wires (Viessmann) are hardened and I make the loops very carefully.
Ciao

Hi there dear friends.
Jörg, here the first test of the pliers tested on a piece of copper wire. 8)
The first Viessmann wires using the pliers worked well.
Until next time.

Great work Werner and Coleen

Thanks guys for the compliments.
Good day dear friends, I was reminded that I hav'nt given any feedback lately. We were sidetracked and I finally have the Ver 1.0 switchboard attached to the layout.
See the pictures below.
There is more to come.
Ciao
ColWer

Hi guys,
Just a quick comment regarding the switchboard, that there is a Ver 2.0 switchboard that will look similar to the one that was in Rooiels.
So the weekend a lot was done on the layout and herewith the pics below.
-
With the exception of the catenary the left hand side of the layout is almost complete.
We did the plan of the proposed farm to be installed this week.
So below the pics show the area where the farm will be and the second picture is the actual plan designed on the dining room table.
The boundary fence droppers have been planted, trimmed and painted and the next step will be "planting" the grass.
hope you like it.

Hi guys,
Here an update on the winery. All the vines are planted and the pictures will give the overview.
-
The next pictures will give you a total overview including the farmstyle restaurant selling their famous vino.
The close up shows how they are labouring to get the fruit to the winepress.
-
Another update on the new Ver 2.0 on the making of the vines.
We were not happy with the paint texture we got using normal acrylic paint and decided to make new ones.
Yep, the making of it was easy and because we were going to airbrush them I made a nice production set up.
See the pictures below.
-
I sat haunched up on the layout cutting out the Ver 1.0 vines (well most of them) and glued the new ones in its place. I stopped counting after a 100. Lots of Bostik glue. :D
-
Some more pictures of the vines, oh yes the labourers were well looked after, they had umbrellas protecting them in the sun. ;D

A different view...... ;)

Hi there train friends!
Just a small update.... :) Next to the orchard we have 2 Swiss Chalets and the families are having a grill, pronounced gggrriiill.
Take a guess where they are from.
The fire is going nicely made from charcoal and not rooikrans. Checkout the coal.
-
the fire is going nicely but nothing to grill yet and the wive had to go and fetch it in the kitchen.
This can only be said in a South African way, ribbetjie and wors or in English, spare ribs and sausage.
Painted, I mean marinated and then on the grill.
Enjoy

Nice close-up of the grill with the goodies on the fire.

Hi Steve, do you know where I can get some in orange and/or red?
Hi Werner,
It just so happens I have a few hundred 0805 red LED's in my (future) project box that I was planning to use for signals. They are really small at 2.0x1.25x0.8mm, and you will need at least an optivisor and steady hands when working with the buggers. You are welcome to a few if you want.
Steve
-
Hi Steve, very kind of you.
I am looking specifically for the 5mm led's installed in Chinese tea lanterns that flicker like a real candle.

Hi dear train Friends, I trust you are all well.
Just a small update with regards to catenary.
Point number one is that this stuff is expensive to cover a complete layout. :'(
So we decided just to install the catenary on one side looking like there is more to come. This fits beautiful in the Era III period.
The section where it ends is showing the concrete block that was casted with the bolts ready in place and a little bit rusted. This is for 1:87.
The wood was filed by hand it it took a long time. Fortunately I only made 6.
See pics below.
Take care
Ciao
Colwer
-
Very, Very nice Werner.....
Jip, even in N Scale it is very expensive :'( That is why I only did the one oval on my layout. I have some left, so might still do one of the sidings.
Any case, looking forward the see the end result as I'm planning to fit my HO Shunting Layout with catenary
Cheers, Evert
-
Very nice, you only made 6?
I need a few as well. ;D

Have you considered 3D printing ?
Steve

Hi Steve,
We are interested in 3D printing and the one Luke Towan is using lately, Anycubic Photon, but its too expensive, sadly. :-\

Good day dear train friends,
An update for the winery. It needs a wall to keep the vines in good condition especially the steam trains bellowing smoke when passing and to prevent the winery from sliding onto the train tracks.
Below the pictures in stages. A lot of work on the circular saw especially to cut the little hats on the posts.
-
I had to spruce up the wall by adding the Heki Styropor walls.
I think I am happy with the result.
See pictures below.
Enjoy until next time.

Awesome work Werner.
That wall came out really good. Love it  :thumb:

Hi dear train friends,
I made a wall for the 2 Swiss chalets. The posts are smaller and I decided to put a ball on top of said post and some metal work in between. Something different.
A bit fiddely and I had to contend with the track curve. I also tried spraying with my airbrush the first time. I took a while to get the hang of it and I was forced to spray outside as the fumes were overpowering on the inside.
Going to get an extractor. That should do it.
-
I must add that this 3 ply was warpy. No idea what you call it. The pros on this group will no what its called. ;)
And some more pictures to show the end result.
Enjoy and take care. :thumb:

Hi dear train friends,
Small update. We have this Kombi with a Caravan and no tent. How difficult can it be?
Found some solid copper wire and straighten it, soldered into the aluminium poles and made my own tarpaulin.
See pics below.

Ok, and now placing it. I have a nice big tree near the train tracks and pitched the tent.

Colleen did the final touches and an excellant job with bushes, flowers etc.
Have an awesome evening.

And something else..... sorry..... How did the Kombi get there??
Awesome work guys, Love it.....
-
Kombi is 4x4...
Looking good. I feel like a picnic now - in the rain... :thumb:
-
Good day dear train friends,
Yes, yes, yes, I knew there was going to be something said about the white standard umbrella of the 50's. Even my first tent in 1966 was white, (the one's with the big 3" diameter poles keeping the tent up.) I'm digressing. :D
White umbrellas are allowed, but here we have a brand new one, and..... it is in colour. ;)
Ciao
ColWer
-
Hi again,
True the Kombi is not a 4 x 4 and the question was how did they get there.
The rail crossing was designed and built and it is in the process of being installed. This couple just tested it before it will get "nailed/glued" down.
Hope you like it!
Ciao

Great work..... Mmmmmm quite a challange to fit a crossing across Marklin track !!
Cheers, Evert

..... Mmmmmm quite a challange to fit a crossing across Marklin track !!
Good question - how did you do that? Close up pics please...
-
Dear train friends,
Thanks for the positive feedback re the rail crossing. It's in and looks good.
The challenge is with contact to the locomotives with the third rail.
The "sleepers" were sand to the minimum. Less than 0.5mm. That should solve the problem. The glue is setting. ;)
The second rail crossing at the farm is also in. Close up photos to come. I'm reading up on the operator who has to guard the rail crossing.
But in the meantime a small update with maps set up on forest walks. That was fun assembling/glueing miniature laser models.
The box is huge and out popped a small packet the size of a lion matchbox.
Anyway here the assembly pics.
-
Here a picture with the map in it's place.
Keep well everyone.

Thanks guys for the complements. And Steve, ssshhhtt, don't tell the tourists. ;) :D.
The story with the hammer. Some days nothing seems to work and that small part in your tweezer goes piiiinng in the opposite direction you thought it flew.
So, I now put my biggest hammer next to the project I am working on and nothing goes missing, really. ;)

Hi Ed, I like your office, I see a train book. ;)

Hallo dear train friends,
Found this "falling tree" in my cupboard and a lovely place to install it next to the vineyard.
The plastic box that will house the servo motor had to be made smaller to fit.
No problem, saw, file and trim and the servo fitted nice and snug.
-
Hi there, further to the falling tree.
Notice no hammer hey. A little birdie told me to test before assembly and close up, yes you guessed it. Not working.
So open it all up and start testing.
I found that the brand new item had a problem. The orange wire was pinched in the servo casing and after sorting that it all worked again.
Assembled again and still worked. :D :D
-
Had to make a big hole to fit the new box and pull some wire through with the switch to activate and for good measure 16V AC.
-
I put some Noch grass carpet to cover the mechanism and for the final touch I "planted" some grass master grass.
Pity I can't post a video, but you will have to believe me. On request I can forward a short video.
But wait..... there's more...... ;)
I have a Viessmann e-motion Forester cutting down a tree. That needs to be installed with sound effects. ;)
Have a great day.

Thank you everybody for the kind words. Appreciate it.
So the next project is the construction of the farm to the left of the layout. So many different topics.
Animals, fields, grazing, milking cows, chickens, tractors, horses, trees, access roads, rail crossing, fencing etc. etc.
Below the picture of where we are going to build.
Oh, and we stocked up on Cappucchino. Bit low on muffins. ;)
Until next time, Best regards.
Ciao
ColWer

Very, Very nice.....
Mmmmmmm, Coffee and Muffins can really work
-
Good day dear train friends,
Here an update on the farming.
As said before we did the planning first to see if everything will fit.
Then the outfields were staked and poles were planted and we did some wire pulling with cotton thread.
Anybody that has done/tried that is quite aware of the challenge. You successfully do the curling around 5 poles and then the last one slips off and as you try to recover they all uncurl in the process. That was fun. ;)
Ok, and then we planted some grass with the static devise. First the 2.5mm and then the 6mm "grass" between the poles. That's where the lawnmower/tractor don't reach.
-
And finally the farm.
Hope you liked the update. :)
Stay safe and Ciao

Hi dear train Friends,
Trust you had a great weekend. Just a small update. ;)
The farm needs a rail crossing and so looking at simple crossings we came up with this idea. space at the farm is an issue.
The pole was a 2.8mm aluminium pipe which was cut, primed and painted white.
Then with Yamiya 6mm tape I ringed off the sections I did not want to paint.
Then with the airbrush I painted the rings red.
Made the resting pods for the poles also from 2,8mm alu pipe and then soldered the Y pieces which was then sprayed grey.
The box to hold the mechanism and pole was made from polystyrene 1mm.
-
And here the results.
Have a great week and stay safe.

Good day dear Train Friends,
I trust you are well.
The building continued albeit slowly. ;)
Next up was the Compressor House. As the building/glueing increased the more disappointed I was, as it was just to empty inside the house. ;)
This will be close to the visitors. I have friends that wants to see everything close so I made a plan. ;) :D
And in the process I lost the cap of the Faller glue. Don't worry I made a plan!
-
See what I mean, it's just too empty. :o
So I built a small workshop. Cupboards, workbench, steel cabinet, oil drum on pallet, duck board, vice mounted on the work bench and grinder.
Just for fun I added overhead lighting as well.
-
I even added the fan belt on the compressors.
Some close-ups too.
Until next time.

Hi Ed, you are the winner! :thumb:
The word "duckboard" was created during the early 20th century to describe the boards or slats of wood laid down to provide safe footing for the soldiers of World War I across wet or muddy ground in trenches or camps. The original duckboards didn't always work as intended though.
Used in workshops to ensure the artisans don't get cold feet.
Saw these a lot at caravan parks in the ablution blocks at the showers.
Have a great day guys. It's going to be a cold weekend.

Good day dear train friends,
Small update. Wanted to make a fence but a little bit different. You can not have the same one everywhere. 8)
So I made a little jig to drill the holes in the same area of each match "post". I had to make about 70 and had to start up a small production line.
A slant was cut on top of the post so that the rain water can run off.
All the holes were drilled with the Dremel and then painted a dark brown. And that was a mistake. :D
Hot Tip! First paint and then drill the holes for the wire. I realized that when I wanted to thread the wire through the posts. :D
I had to open up each hole and there were approx 140 of them. :)
Once the holes were open again I threaded the wire through the holes. Boy that was fun. Took about 2 hours. :D
I think the pics will tell the story.
Best regards until next time. :thumb:

I still need to paint the wire a darker shade. You can see the shiny copper wire.

Good day dear train friends,
New project started! :thumb:
It was fun building this kit.
Placed it on the layout and found a few challenges. ;)
It was too dark inside and I knew just putting in 2 globes won't resolve the light issue. Nice space in between the tracks. Hmmmmm....... ;)
Thats where I want to put a small repair area. This is going to be a fun project. If you can remember the Compressor House project.
-
I started off with a beam in the middle. No U Beam brass in my stores so I just made one myself out of wood.
Placed three led's on said beam and fitted in the locomotive shed. Love the electronic work.
-
Lighting still insufficient and made two more beams fitted with "fluorescent" lights on either side and busy painting the inside walls white.
Painting still in progress. Had no white Tamiya to spray and had to use paint brush with unknown make. :(
I put an angle on the "fluorescent" lights to illuminate the loco and floor area.
My soldering skills were really tested. Nope, no burn marks.
Make-shift spray area on top of the circular saw.
-
And made some trunking covers, sprayed and glued on with lots of mini clamps. Yeah, yeah.....
Ok, thats it folks for now.
Until next time. :thumb:
Ciao
ColWer
-
Very neatly done, but please arrange the colors of the mini clamps a bit more uniform.
Now you also need some electric mechanism under the layout so that you can open and close the sheds doors.
-
Very, Very Nice......
Awesome LocoShed, really like that kit.
Ooooooo, nice lights...... Going to look awesome, would like to see the detail, I still have to do mine too.
Cheers, Evert
-
Good evening train friends,
We have a nice nip in the air and the modeling continues.
Assembled the three trunking in the shed and yes..... sorry I did not arrange the colour schemes as previously requested. I must make a note of that...... ;)
The foreman still on duty.....
-
And the first night shots.
Not too bad, but I am missing some clarity.
The cell phone makes it look much brighter than what it really is.
In real life as discussed with Jörg the loco sheds were really dim lit to almost dark. When oiling the bearings the men had oil burners for light. I speak for DB.
-
So I had an idea. I masked off the area on the inside of the shed roof, gave it a coat of primer and two coats of white.
Again the cell picture does not give the true reflection of the ambiance. There is a red glow visible in real. You'll have to come and see for yourself. :D ;)
But, let me know what you think.
Ciao
ColWer
PS. There is more to come.....
-
Very, Very Nice Werner...... I like that Loco shed....... It is awesome !!!!!!

Also the walls would tend to be dirty, especially in the lower third.
New phone, too many functions, however in real time it does not look that bright at all. Also I switched the overhead "search lights" off in the Train Room. Must make a note of that..... ;)
Black oil marks on the wall by the artisans still to come. It's a brand new Locoshed.
More to come....... ;)

Hi there dear Train Friends,
Small update. The Foreman ordered the new machinery for the Locoshed and it arrived...!
-
Everybody is excited, the lifting rope broke and looking for the back-up.... :D
The unpacking is going to be so much fun.
The Foreman is happy....
Until next time.

Nice scenes of the delivery of machinery.
There is something that bothers me in your shed.
The track should be in the floor and not on it.
Try and cut the plastic where the track is out.
That would lower the track a bit, then start to fill up the rest of the floor with
sheet styrene from the hobby shop.
-
Very, Very nice Werner.
I like your scenes, very cool.
Yes, the track should be in the floor, normally only the track is visible. Ties is covered with the flooring and one of them can have an inspection pit with some welders :thumb: O:-)
Looks great so far.....
Cheers, Evert
-
Hi guys,
Thank you for the good feed back. :thumb:
The track on top of the plastic floor on the inside worried me as well. I was thinking of thin Balsa wood or even plain hardboard. The tracks should actually not be visible.
With a dark colour for the ground floor. Between the rails should also be covered. The third rail will just have to stay. The joy of 3 rail.
The ground outside of the locoshed must also blend into the inside.
The crates were handmade, rough and ready for any type of transport in the 50's and 60's.
Appreciate the compliments. :D

Werner, if you are willing to test something....
The floor of you LocoShed.... I would pour a watery mixture of creatstone on the outside of the track level with the top of the rail.
For the inside I would fill it till the top of the sleepers. Once it is dry you can sand it lightly and then paint. Should work well and will look GREAT..... :thumb:
If you do not want it that permanent, build it from bluefoam, easy to work with, to shape and sand. Same way I built my HO platforms.
I would also build the outside of the track level with the top of the rails and inside level with the top of the sleepers. Should work quite well.
Just my idea.....
Cheers, Evert.
-
Hi Evert, thank you so much for your suggestions.
Yes I am busy with putting a level in the shed to the tracks using Balsa wood.
Going to spray the primer in a few minutes and see how that comes out.
The pit is "dug, bricked up, steps built and painted".
Tracks are laid and it looks great.
Will keep you posted.
Best regards

Pics will follow shortly..... :thumb:
-
Awesome..... Looking forward to see how it turns out....
-
Good day dear Train friends,
The Building Inspector visited the site and was not happy.
Where's the pit, the workshop floor next to the track. Moaning about the workers going to brake their ankles, no filler between the sleepers.
Everything out!!!
So all the machinery for the locoshed back onto the trucks for storage. :o :o
-
The pit was cut with a modified jigsaw blade to allow a specific depth.
Of course the track had to be unscrewed and removed. :( Then all the wiring had to be removed. :o
And then the locoshed had to be removed. Had to find the hidden screws.
Vacumed whilst the jigsaw was making dust. :D
The pit fitted beautifully and a frame of tape around said pit to round off the edges nicely and then painted.
The pit was made from 1mm styrene.
-
Some more pics.....
Had to put steps in the pit for the Stoker and Machinist when going down in the pit with their oils and rags etc.
The locoshed had to be modified. I decided not to cut the base out, but only the pit area.
-
Whilst the paint dried I made the "concrete Floors" for next to the track.
The concrete floors were made from Balsa wood, glued and once set sprayed with grey primer.
The concrete floors are only lying loosely for the moment until the track and sleepers are weathered.
Hope you like it. Let me know. More to come....

That's a mean building inspector. :)
I see you are trying to solve the problem that us three rail users have.
The center studs for current pick up.
Only one tie in the pit will not work, the pick up shoe will drop down to far and get caught.
I have seen a neat solution to this in a magazine once, this person had a brass plate mounted on a rod connected
to a solenoid that at the push of a button was in the middle of the pit and then could be retracted again to give you the
view into the open pit.
-
:thumb:
Pity about the centre stud - you'll have to reverse into shed...
-
What about inserting a thin piece of glass, perspex or acetate in/over the pit, level with the ties?
-
Good day dear Train Friends,
Here an update on the latest in the locoshed.
The inserts between the sleepers are in (unpainted).
I believe the inserts were around 130. Each cut to 4.2 x 15.0mm with a few spare.
-
And then everything got painted.
The Foreman seems happy with it.
-
Then made platforms around the shed from Balsa wood to cover the sleepers.
-
Instead of sanding the ends down to tera firma I made steps with off cut Balsa. Railings to follow where required.
And then the weathering. First primer coats with sanding in between.
Brown wash paint dabbed all over and then wiped off. You guys know the drill. ;)
-
And then finally some sunset shots (really). :D
Hoped you guys liked it.

Very, Very Nice Werner......
That is really looking very cool..... It's a bit glossy?? Or is that just the pictures.

Looks good what the two of you are getting up to there. :thumb:
Just consider that oil stains tend to be a bit shiny, so don't make everything completely matt.
-
Hi there dear Train Friends,
Found an interesting video of the BR 01 0519 work up and noticed that there is a connecting walk way across the pit in the Loco shed.
Pretty much what I have across my pit. ;)
Interesting for 3 railers...... :thumb:

Hi Everybody,
Modelbuilding is progressing slowly but surely.
From the first pic you will see that the ground level needs edging and out came the circular saw, wood and made lots of sawdust.
Cut the pine lengths in a C shape and needed a lot of fitting. Countless walks to the garage.
-
The plain pine needed some grooves as concrete is not thrown in one go.
More sanding and then primer.
Placed some brick and steel fencing just to see how it looks.
Hope you like it.
Until next time.

Good day Gentlemen,
It was a quiet weekend, but small things did happen.
the first pic shows the right hand side with only white wash and on the left with a dirty wash.
The camera is way to close, however from a distance the effect is showing nicely.
Nothing glued down yet. First have to black wash the concrete blocks and once bricks and bars glued down some brown wash to show dirty and rain water stripes.
Some green for moss effects.
See pics below.

Hope you guys liked the pics.

Hallo everybody,
it's been awhile I know :innocent:, however progress was made. :D
The first picture shows how it all started in the Betriebswerk (Locomotive depot) a few months ago. Sorry I checked it is exactly 11 months ago. ::)
The second picture is how it looks now. So much happening there.
-
And the wiring is waiting for me in a few weeks and it is only the Locomotive depot. ::)

Hi everyone,
I trust you are all well.
Small update to show the latest happening in the Loco Yard.
The first pictures shows the little Wheel Monument in the Loco Yard a before and after.
The apprentice arrived late at work this morning and as punishment must clean the Wheel Axle. You can see the head is hanging low form the night before and is barely keeping it all together.
Always wanted a scene like this one.
-
Those that like motorbikes, I believe I got this from our local Train Shop. I believe it is 6 motorbikes in the set.
Easy to assemble with a self made kick stand and then paint it.
Something different. ;D
-
At the rail crossing you have to have a boom.
Bought this set a long time ago from Conrad in DE.
Only one snag, the parts are minute...... ::)
And if you use use your tweezers, ping....... they go flying.
Had to dive numerous times to the floor with a torch to find the parts. Found them every time. Phew..... ;)
-
Built a small garden on the edge of the Loco Yard.
Gardener is using a hose pipe to water the plants with the famous red nozzles.
They had to cut the tree down as it was about to fall on the Signal House.
Gardner is kneeling on the stump and is getting quite a view.
Maybe you can see the water coming out of the nozzle. ::)
-
All that is left to do at the Loco Yard is the power connection.
Lots of wires to go to the control panel below the Loco Yard.
More next time.
Hope you like the feed back.

Almost there with the wiring, busy with the looming. First test was awesome!

Good day everyone,
Below a small update as promised.
It's been a productive few weeks bringing a close to the construction of the small Locoyard that I started a few months ago.
Been playing around with camera settings. I trust you like it.
 8)
-
I tried the Panorama setting on my camera, I trust you will see the effect of part of the layout.
You can see the Station and the Town still needs to be constructed, but that is another story.
Next is the Railcrossing...... :thumb:
-
I constructed a Railcrossing as previously reported, but it was lacking something.
See if you notice it.
::)
-
Yep, the Railcrossing light system (blinking) was missing. ::)
So I built the electronics using a 555 timer with 3 outputs. The circuit has its own DC power supply.
It worked fine and tested it before installing.
Had to take numerous photos to get the the leds all on.
-
Now the wiring! Had lots of fun with this.
The complete Locoyard, the Farm and the Switchhouse at the tunnel entrance consisted of 96 wires.
this was brought to the Power Supply Board under the Locoyard which will be covered by a Noch Styrofoam wall for easy removing should there be a need to check why it is still working. ::)
A lot of wires in 1m space so I had to make a small jig to keep the wires untangled.
Surprisingly it did go fairly well. ;)
-
Some more wiring done. It did happen over a weekend.
The last picture shows the end result when the looming was completed with the labelling.
-
There was a request for a night shoot. It did happen. But not not easy with all the lighting close up.
Played around with the shutter speed, but see the results for yourself.
I can assure you standing in front of the layout is a 100 times better than the pictures itself.
I trust you all like it. Your comments are welcome.
Ciao
ColWer
-
Very neatly done.
But I have to ask why green plugs?
-
Night shots are looking good. :thumb:
Yes night photography is an art.
Fortunately now with digital cameras its easy to experiment
and try out different setting, till you get a nice effect.
-
Your electrical work came out awesome Werner..... Really neat.
Yea, night pictures is difficult, but as Jörg said play around and digital make it easy
Really nice work.....
-
Hi everyone, thank you for the feedback. :thumb:
A further update as to what is going to happen.
The next stage of this build is to power up the layout.
This is going to be exciting times for if all goes well the trains will be connected to the Control Unit and be able to run the trains.
That is off course if I get all the dust off the tracks, but that will be another story. ::)
I made a mock up of the Power Supply Board (PSB)and I would like to hear your comments.
There will be spacers below the PSB to allow for ventilation.
All cables will be running in ring binders just to keep it neat.
The Märklin transformers will be used for the street lighting.
The small Trix transformer is just in case I need more power. 8)
Incoming power will go through the LM317 Power Regulators and the current will be limited to 1.5A.
The power regulating circuits need to be built.
Let me know what you think.

Careful if you switch that on all at once, your neighbors lights may just
go dim. >:D
Looking good. :thumb:

Very cool Werner...... Exiting times
-
Hi everyone,
Small update. Wanted to add the Castle lights and the flickering unit for the rail crossing to my Power Supply Board. Will only take a few minutes, Yeah..... :o
And guess what, the one led is dead. Sounds familiar, and the opening up of two weeks work started.
I found the fault with a solder break in the heat shrink sleeve. Make note to yourself to ensure the heat gun setting is NOT too high. :bluduh:
Re-soldered and all is working including the additional wiring.
Night shoot photos to follow. :-*
Have a great one and stay safe.

Good day everyone,
Have I got good news!
The Main Power to the front of the switch board is on and the complete Märklin Digital System is powered up!
No smoke, no loud bangs with that electronic smell and the power is still on in the complex. 8)
Now the digital wiring from the tracks to the Control Unit and the hook up of the Booster.
Feel very happy about this.
Have a great day.

Hi everyone,
small update, but a big mile stone, the track is live again after many years. :D
The wiring is connected and the two circuits are not clashing.
Unfortunately I cannot show the small video I made, however a picture of said action.
Those that know the big rules of connecting the CU and the Booster, it is critical. No smoke!
-
Below the track of the connections made for the CU and the Booster.
Lot of time spent under the layout. Missed my friend J with his beach chair on wheels.
-
And the Black Box?
Enjoy the pics

Very neat and professional looking Werner...... Nice one :thumb:
-
Hi everyone,
The plan for the weekend was to connect some decoders for the slip solenoids, but to no avail.
On switching the Control Unit on, the short circuit protection kicked in protecting the Control Unit etc.
After several fruitless attempts, wishful thinking, and a call to Jörg there was only one thing to do and it was to check where I was working last.
Unfortunately I worked on wiring, securing the tracks with screws and painting the tracks.
The short story is after undoing all the screws and tracks and undoing all the track power wires in the station the short disappeared. After re connecting everything the short was back.
Traced it down to an additional earth wire soldered onto the track forming a solder blob at the end of the wire where this was touching the copper strip under the flex tracks.
The first picture you can clearly see the arcing at the area of the short.
The second picture is with all the solder removed. So much space between fish plate and the copper strips of the flex track.
The good part is it is all working again.
That's all folks.
Enjoy your week.
Ciao
ColWer

The devil is in the detail.
You are not the first and definitely not the last person to do that.
-
The good thing is that you found it and it is working again.
Some time the hobby is frustrating, but once it is fixed it is all good...... All part of life that make the hobby interesting
-
After almost attacking my layout-in-progress with big and sharp m@&ring tools out of frustration with short circuits, I adopted the following approach which I ALWAYS follow whenevr I am doing anything related to track wiring.
I connected a 3v buzzer to a 2x 1.5V AA battery pack, and have wires with crocodile clips which I use to connect to the N and S rails. If a short occurs when connecting a wire wrong anywhere, the buzzer sounds.
Steve
PS: this is version 2. Version 1 had a 3V bulb which lit up when a short occurred, which was not much help when you are on your back under the layout and the damn bulb lights up top and can't be seen ! :loco:
PS 2 : make sure there is no power to the track either !
-
Hi Steve,
I like the buzzer idea. I think I have one. ;) 8)

Hi everyone,
I trust everyone had a nice Christmas and I wish you all a great festive season.
Small update. I thought this would interest some. A very good friend showed me a GoPro that would fit on a wagon and just by chance I found the GoPro Hero 4 Session.
It was released in 2015. It had one small scratch at the back of the camera and everything works. The lens is in mint condition.
To get this little cube to "pair" with your smartphone was fun. :blech:
The information found on the internet was written by geniusses and could not be followed. With the help of my sons they got it going in no time. This electronic stuff is difficult for senior citizens.
Below some pictures of the new toy. This is going to be fun when visiting friends.
If anyone has worked with the GoPro Hero 4 Session camera please contact me for I have some questions.
Those that want a small video clip just send me a Whatsapp.
Take care and happy modelling.
