LooVille Extention to a L shape....
« on: January 06, 2015, 07:45:09 AM »
Good Morning All,

I was a bit busy over the last view months and could not really give attention to my layout.
But over Christmas and New Year we went to Hermanus just to get away from everything.

I want to extend my current layout so that it forms a L shape, so I sat down and drew some stuff.
This is the current design. Still need a lot of work but I think most is there.
This will be the same size as my current Layout and the longest section in the yard is 1.4m

Please give comments, this has been comming along for quite some time now and have changed a lot of times.
70% of the buildings I already have and I have all the Track and Points.

Cheers,
Evert

PS, sorry, I know the pic is small.

Hi Evert,

Could you include some dimension in the drawing please?  That would hep to put things into perspective a bit better.  Would it be possible to include a 100mm grid in the picture?  Also where and how does this join up with the existing layout?

The only comment I really have right now, is that less is more!  It looks like you're trying to squeeze a lot of stuff into a very small space.  Think of what you want to do with the scenery around the structures.

Otherwise it's an interesting looking concept.  Good job  :thumb:

Hi,

Thank you for the input and comments.

Right, 100mm grid added, you should be able to work out size from there.
The red arrows is where my current layout is comming in, I still have to work on that.
The blue corner is my current layout, once the connection is done I will load a new design with both layouts in one picture.
Then I also still need to do the Mainline that will go around the yard.
Top right will be a mountain and the idea is to have the back of the roundhouse up against the mountain slopes, almost like they had to blast the rock away to build the roundhouse. As for the rest, it will be flat, all dirt/semi broken cobblestone roads, few trees, bushes and train parts. Want it to look old and dirty, if I can say that, but still operational yard. So will do loads of painting and weathering and detail on this one.

Unfortunately space is always a bit of a problem and I would like to fit all the steam components into the yard.

I'll try to have the design done over the weekend, will see how it goes.  :thumb:

looking at your track plan makes me envious!  I so wish I had the space to set up a reasonable sized layout in HO scale!!!

There's your problem - HO scale... Switch to Normal and you'll be fine :stir:

Hi Evert,
I like your design very much, should be a lot of fun to build and operate.

HAHAHAHA Ed!  It is BECAUSE I already have a small N scale layout that I do not have space for HO...   lol

not really, just joking... I DO have a N scale coffee table layout in my living room.   but I like building / kitbashing in HO...

Hi Evert,

I think you will have access problems with the extension as designed.  I presume the top of the plan is against a wall and that there is no access from the back.  If so, reaching across to the yard tracks to the throat behind the roundhouse will be in excess of 700mm.

Most of the handling of freight cars and switching will be done on the classification yard tracks.   I suggest you look at bringing the classification yard to the front, and put the the turntable lead tracks at the back with the roundhouse in the back corner.

This will bring the turnouts to the front of the layout which will make maintenance a lot easier.   A futher advantage of doing it this way is that the flimsy structures which are adjacent to the turntable lead will be further back out of (h)arms way.

Cheers,
Steve

Good Morning Steve,

Thank you very much for the input and the suggestions.
I will definitely have a look in doing that. I'll try to mirror the whole layout and then mirror the roundhouse so that you don't see it from the back.

I'm struggling with space at the moment and need to make it about 500mm shorter.
So a lot of design and changes is still in progress.

Thank you again.  :thumb:

Evert

Build it as 2 modules, just a thought.

Cheers Jörg.

Thank you Jörg,

My dad also suggested that.
I will have to see, because I have a maximum length space of 2300mm that I can use. My current layout can move a little bit.
Just have to think carefully...
Re-packed the whole of the garage and my car is sleeping outside now. The things we do for our trains hey....

Any case, will post pictures soon again.

Cheers,
Evert

Hi Evert,

I agree with what Steve said.  Flip it around, move the structures to the back and the yard to the front.  That makes it easier to get to the uncoupling rolling stock in the yard, make it easier to manually throw turnouts (or points) and protects the structures from been bumped.  This may also fit in better with your idea of having the mountain cut away behind the round house.

Of course this may cause havoc with your existing layout.

Space is always the challenge. The trick is figuring out how to get the best with the little bit that we have got  ;)

Cheers,

Niel
