Oil tanker
« on: November 30, 2019, 11:54:33 PM »
Aloha,
a few years ago I came across an article in a German model train magazine which sparked my interest.
A bit of history, in Germany during the steam era it was normal to have water for the locos on the platform to be filled up for the next trip,
but if coal or later the oil fired locos needed to be refueled then the loco would have to come off the train and be
replaced by a refueled one.
Then they got a great idea and converted a goods coach to a pump coach coupled to a oil tanker which could then be brought
to the station and the express train loco could stop next to this pump car and be refueled.
Weinert, a German model company that produces beautifully detailed brass and white metal parts mostly in HO sells the kit for this
oil tanker.
So I bought the kit.
The detail is stunning.  :thumb:
Tonight I sat down and started.
The two coaches to be modified.
The kit, first the etched brass plate.
Secondly the cast brass parts, decals and some white metal castings.

The first part, the walkway.
Cut out, filled clean, bent up and soldered the bends.
Second photo shows the soldered in swivel pin.

Oil supply pipe from the tank car.
The detail on the flanges is amazing.  :thumb:
Second photo shows the pump, also with flange details inside the car.
The pipes are fitted into the pump. The top pipe uses the pump as a swivel.

A bit of prep work now on the tank car.
Then paint, final assembly, apply decals and enjoy.
Or maybe not.  >:D
I am now tempted to order a few more parts, sprung buffers to start of with.
Lets see what else I can find at www.weinert-modellbau.de

Wow, this is soooooo Cool, I also have a few Oil burning Steam Locos. This would be GREAT to do in n, I'm sure that I can get this 3D Printed.

Thank you for sharing, it really look stunning. Add some pictures of the actual wagons if there is any available.

Cheers.

Aloha,
Sunday update on this project.
Last week one evening I removed some of the original lettering from the coach, carefully
scraping and then wiping with a thinners rag I got the writing off with out any damage to
the body of the car.  :thumb:
Today I selected some paint, masked off most of the coach to replicate repair patches and
air brushed the coach.
Very happy with the result.

Then I fitted some of the detail parts to the roof, masked of the complete
coach and air brushed the roof.

Aloha,
rummaging in my boxes of train parts I found some nice detailing parts.
Brass steps and two sprung buffers.  :thumb:  ;D
So I promptly got to work.
First photo shows the chassis of the coach the way it was, the original thick cast on plastic step (red arrow)
and buffers.
I cut them off and drilled the holes for the buffers and steps.
Soldered some brass wire to the steps and glued them in.
Photo two.

Hi,
after a few more enjoyable hours this project is now complete.  :thumb:
I'm very happy with the way it came out.
Photos of the completed model on the main line for lack of a station.
