So after the successful weekend, Monday evening became very frustrating. On Sunday I had etched the next circuit board for the signals and set about soldering in all the components.
All done I connect the power and ten seconds later I see smoke. A lot of heat as well. So I start checking, can't find a fault. Desolder components still have a short.
Finally give up and went to bed.
Tonight I checked again and finally found that the one new diode 1N4148 is faulty.

Replaced that and it works correctly now.

Fitted to layout and the last signal for now is illumated now. Wednesday evening I must connect the track power and feed back and then some more testing needs to be done.
Stay tuned.
