In the meantime I have been reading up about various ways to have feedback
to switch the signals.
In the staging yards I just simply cut the one rail and as the train moves over it the metal
wheels and axels do the switching. Simple and effective.  :thumb:
But for the mainline signals to switch over to the DC current for slowing the train down gently
I want some thing that is more accurate to a very specific point, there where the pick up shoe
of the locomotive is.
Infra red sensors and Led's are being considered, I have circuit diagrams for this function and have
also found the components are still available, also here in SA.
But I also wanted to try reed switches.
They are just a bit to big and obtrusive in the track to me.
Well today I fitted one by drilling in from the side between the sleepers and also a bit into the cork roadbed.
So now its nicely hidden, but the small magnets that are supplied with it are not strong enough to activate it.
I have a nice strong magnet that does work.
First picture is the reed switch in the track.
Second picture I just to test connected a light via track power with the strong magnet und the tender of the BR 44.

Very nice Jörg.

Have you ever thought to investigate Arduino?
I bought a Arduino Uno board as well as a Arduino Sound board to use at my road crossing. Lights Sound and the booms will be operated from this. Still looking for some kind of switch. I think the Infra red sensors and Led's will work the best for this.

Have a good day.
Regards,
Evert

No, the way I'm doing it now is all items and systems that I have used before, understand how
they work and have also spend quite some time adapting them for my use.
This is what I am comfortable with.

Hi Evert,
I am very interested in an Arduino and would like to hear more about it....  :) ;D :thumb:

Hey Jörg,

No problem, you must use what works for you and what you are comfortable with  :thumb:
Was just putting it out there.

Werner, we can talk, I do not know everything, but I'm learning and playing with the stuff

Small Saturday update.
Did some ballasting work this week, every evening a little bit.

I have managed to fit three more reed switches between the sleepers
and all have tested correctly.  :thumb:
Using 6x3mm Neodymium magnets now, those are very strong.
Now I need to make some circuit boards, unfortunately the photo resist board that I still
had was so old that the transfer did not work. I still have some photo resist spray, but also
long expired. I enquired what the cost of new material is.  :eek2: :blech: :bluduh: :loco: :loco:

Easy for you to say.
So are you going to donate some material?

Ballast looks good. I like the look of that.

Aloha,
Friday night update.
Been busy this week with some electronic work.
I built two of my own design signal modules, actually I built three, but the one was shall I say
not so successful.
Actually I took a wild chance and purposefully inverted the circuit, when power was applied there was a loud
bang and then I heard the song "When smoke gets in your eyes"  ;D ;D ;D ;D
End of experiment. Nothing ventured nothing gained.  :)
Here's the photo of the first completed double signal module.

Mounted under layout and starting to connect all the wires.
Plan for this weekend is to connect all the reed switches and the two signals
to this unit and test everything.

The green LED indicates a signal?
Very nice indeed!  :thumb: :thumb:
