I wonder if the NGG is not the oldest specific model train club in SA. Anyway, Ronnie is on here but for now, see their professional website.

Hi,

EMRIG celebrated their 30th Anniversary last year so we have been formed for over 31 years now. However there has been many changes in committee and other members over the years. But our objectives, to have fun and keep the hobby growing with new and younger members is working.

Hey Colin,

There are other younger members....  ???  Who knew.  As one of the younger members, where are these guys hanging out?

Cheers,

Niel

Yes Neil, where are they? We are always looking for younger i.e. your sort of age and we have had some, but at that age they have other interests such as girlfriends, families, and even business to run. However all of our members are young at heart and that is what matters, even 73 year olds like me!
Cheers.

Hmmm.  That may be where I'm going wrong...  ;)

I'm 43 now. I started age 4 till 14. Then it was girls, bikes, girls, sports, and some more girls.

I got married at 22 (didn't have to by the way >:D) and then back into the trains at 26, the year before my son was born.

Been at it since then. Some times very actively, sometimes not. Started a club with some mates (Colin, you'll know then - Glynn and Kevin Chamberlain who are members here too), got tired of the club and currently its me, Pink Floyd and a few mates in teh garage...

Do I count as young still?

this is a sad reality for MOST clubs in the hobby... the people that NEED to be introduced has little or no interest in the hobby, since it is perceived to be work.  we do not just take it out the box and go.  second is cost, which also tends to exclude many youngsters from entering the bobby.  then, at the stage where they start to work and earn money, the priority seems to be cars houses and getting a family, next its is school and university.   then grand children and getting ready for retirement.

we often hear the argument of computers and games.   interesting statistics I saw recently, was that in the PC/Console gaming industry the pre 25year old bracket only accounts for something like 16% of their sales, 25-35 is something like 42%, then 35-45 is something like 35, and the rest is accounted for by older folks.   why?  money... pre 25 you tend to have very little disposable income, school/study etc.

our hobby is not cheap.  yes you CAN do it fairly cheap, but reality is you do need some money. yes, it is not different to other hobbies, I know.  I just think the money factor I a big one, and it scares a lot of potential initates off before they even begin...

that is my 2cents (Zim cents that is) worth...
