Walters Cornerstone Mountain Lumber Company Sawmill
« on: January 10, 2017, 08:03:43 AM »
Good Morning All  :howzit:

A while back I bought the Walters Cornerstone Mountain Lumber Company Sawmill Kit from Model Train Stuff.
The last few month I serviced and fixed and fitted Decoders to quite a bit of my locos. I'm done with that for now so I decided to start building the Kits I still have. There is about 6 I still have to build, so the Sawmill is first on the list.

So here start the build of the Walters Cornerstone Mountain Lumber Company Sawmill:
I do not like the raw Plastic and it looks fake in any case.
The kit is very well built and lots of detail. The walls have the wood texture on the planks (Picture 03)
I mixed some white and brown with a fair amount of water and painted that on.
Left it to dry and then I cleaned the wall with a pen eraser. Worked extremely well. (Picture 04)

Then I dry-brushed so dark and lighter brown over that to give it some effect. (Picture 05)
Once it was all dried I lightly sanded the walls to clean all the upstanding parts.

Then I glued the grey (metal colored) window frames in.
Think it looks quite good. I'm happy.

Here are some pictures, sorry the detail got a bit lost because I had to make the pictures small, but the idea is still there.
Enjoy...

Some more work done last night....

Next was the shoot for the tree stumps before they get cut up in planks.
I brushed the dark grey plastic with green. Busy building the shoot now then I'll brush some darker green over that in places and then some red-ish brown to represent some rust and wear.

Hope you all have a good day and speak again soon.
Cheers,
Evert

Hi Evert,
Looks good, plastic is not wood... But you can handle it and know whats to do!
Tell me please, what size has the saw mill (ground area)?
Cheers

Hello, Hello All,

Every evening little bit further. Even if it is just to fit a window  :thumb:

Picture 01 - The conveyor is finished. I made it one third shorter as per the given parts.
Picture 02 - Painted the grey for the concrete floor
Picture 03 - Floor finished, rails fitted as well as the top for the working space. This is where the finished Planks go to be loaded on trucks or railway.
Picture 04 and 05 - Walls are being installed on to the base.

Really starting to look awesome now.
Next will be the roof, but still need to paint that. Corrugated Iron roof...

Cheers,
Evert Loo

Good Morning All,

Mmmmmm, trying to make Corrugated Iron roof look like it is rusting is no easy task.
Not sure if I pulled it off, but here is my attempt. And wow, it look for ever....

I'll still work on it a little bit more, but I think the basic idea is there.

Please comment and give input and ideas.
Thank you.  :thumb:

Hi Evert,
it looks very nice, but I have to ask why the straight lines?
Metal rusting will never rust in a straight line.

Oh, LOL

OK, I'll explain that one.... there is actually 3 or 4 layers and the rust is starting where the two sheets overlay. The top one is clean and the bottom one is the rusted one.

Hope it makes sense.

Cheers,
Evert

Ok fair enough, but one rusting piece of metal in close proximity to another will cause that one to rust as well.
So maybe break those straight lines a bit with a bit of rust on the top ones as well.
Just a bit.

Good Morning

OK Cool, I understand what you are saying. Will play around some more and look at more pictures on the net.

Thank you....

So here is a small update.
I installed the first roof section and I added the roof trusses in front. Also painted and weathered.
I also fitted the walkway next to the conveyor.

Some more pictures.
Enjoy.
Cheers, Evert

The roof looks original to me - am I missing something? ???
