« on: January 14, 2015, 03:49:33 PM »
Hi Everybody,

Thanks for Accepting me, I got referred by Glynn Chamberlain from EMRIG,

The name is Gary, I live in Bonaero Park, Kempton Park, (Sort of like the FAR EAST if you must) was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but have lived in SA most of my life.

Just started  collecting trains, I am starting with 00 scale to start with, heard it was the hardest to get hold of but hey what do I know.

Will be starting my first layout this weekend,    :loco: so wish me luck.

Regards to everybody

Gary Downs

If I may ask, why OO ?? Yes it use the same track as HO, but there is a slight scale difference and as you said it is hard to get.

What it you layout plans? Show us under Layouts, Will be nice to see  ;D

Cool, enjoy

I subscribe to Your Model Railway Village, hence the reason for 00 scale,
Its my first layout, so I guess I need as much help and info that I can get,

Would the HO scale work on the same track ?

Oh OK.

According to the Internet, yes. Google is you friend  ;D
I do N Gauge, so my knowledge on other scales is very limited.

This is what I found....

What is the difference between OO and HO?
Nothing as far as the gauge of the track is concerned, i.e. gauge refers to the distance apart of the rails and not the scale size. HO and OO gauge is 16.5mm between the rails.
Scale is a different matter altogether, OO scale is 1/76th of true size or 76 times the model length equals one life size item. Another way of referring to OO scale is 4mm to the foot. i.e. 4mm on the model equals a foot in real life so therefore a six foot tall person in model size is 6 times 4mm or 24mm tall. Funny that two different measuring systems are utilized but that’s the way it goes.
HO on the other hand is 1/87th of true size or 3.5mm to the foot. i.e. that six foot person is now 6 times 3.5mm or 21mm tall.
How come two different scales use the same track I hear you say?
The 2 scales are so close that many years ago the manufacturers opted for one gauge for compatibility.
Just as an aside, at standard gauge of 4’ 8 ½” HO scale is more correct being 4.71 times 3.5mm equalling 16.49mm.
OO is actually undersize and strictly speaking should be 4.71 times 4mm equalling 18.84mm.
This actual discrepancy is catered for by people modelling in EM or P4 gauge.
Most often OO scale is off

Hi Gary and welcome. I lived in Donegal for 2 years back in 2001-2003. Been to Belfast a few times - mostly for model train shows!! I have some pictures somewhere...

Carrickfergus had a little show. But near Holywood was a great show every year.

Welcome and enjoy the forum!

it might be interesting to know that matchbox cars are also in 1/76th scale, and airfix plastic models also made railroad stuff.  All the British brand model trains are OO scale...  coincidence?  I don't think so...

I am not a big fan of British outline models, but do have a few items...

for what it is worth.. the Frateschi 'HO' locos (including the SPOORNET/SAR models) are all actually closer to OO than HO.  this is visible when a Lima class 34 is staged next to a Frateschi class 34...  not hugely different, but still visible....

Thanks Neil, might just take you up on that, do you ever go to the Northmead shop,

Ed, I was over in 2012, stayed just across the water from Hoywood, apparently I just missed it by a few weeks, real pity as well

Francois, the Layout I'm doing is called Little Benton, its a small station Near Newcastle Upon Tyne UK, the whole theme is set in the 60s, so should be some fun trying to get all that right

Regards

Gary

No Worries.  You have mail.

Yes I do go down to the EMRIG layouts sometimes.  Not as often as I should admittedly.  At the momenet the layouts are non-operational cause the club has to move from the shop we were located to a new space directly above where we were.  Some work needs to be done on the space first before anything can be set up.

Cheers,

Niel
