Faulty field magnet
« on: June 18, 2018, 12:33:43 PM »
Aloha,
had a 20 year old unused Märklin Loco on my table this weekend.
Spent its whole life in a display cabinet.
Would not run.
No problem ,dismantle and clean out the old oil that does have a tendency
to solidify over the years if the Loco is not used.
In this case after a good clean and some fresh oil the motor still refused
to turn.
Had a closer look at the field magnet, very small mark left by the armature,
I tried to take a photo of it unsuccessfully.
The little magnet is supposed to be chrome plated, but I noticed that most of the
chrome had come of.
By the looks of it the actual magnet, red circle is breaking up causing it to swell
slightly and as a result causing the half circular metal parts that enclose the armature
to close up and clamp the armature. Green arrows.
Replaced field magnet and the Loco is as good as new.
Second photo shows a bit of the chrome plating that is left.
