So, we changed the house from this
-
To this...
New layout room is the window next to the garage...
-
The room size is 5m by 4.5m but 1m by 4.5m is a walkthrough from the garage to the house. At least the back wall is used for shelves.
I decided to put in cupboards and counter tops. The layout will go in above that - floor height of layout about 1.2m - 1.3m.
-
Need more space to put coffee mugs...
-
Display cases are up
-
Busy unpacking crates...lots of them!
-
2 more display cases to put up and voila!
-
Wow, big changes. :thumb:
-
Awesome Ed......
Going to be awesome...... We need to get your layout up and get trains running :innocent:
Cheers, Evert
-
If all goes well the layout can go up this weekend! :innocent:
-
Nice Ed! :thumb:
-
Holy crap. All of that just to fit a granny in ?
It looks like the end result of one of those US home makeover TV programs, but it looks awesome.
I may just need to visit again, to see if I can still recognize the place ..........
Cheers,
Steve :howzit:
-
Most people just drive by the first time...
I did tell granny not to be spiteful and live long... :peep:
-
So, I had 3 more shelves to put up of which 2 went in the train room and the other in my new study (which almost was the train room - luckily I got out of that one...)
-
I managed to fill the one little shelf in minutes... :innocent:
I wonder what to do with the other 230 locomotives... :loco:
-
So, Saturday came and with it lots of supervisors...
-
And the other side...
-
The old layout had a drop down part. That made the layout into 2 pieces.
Juan came up with the idea to split them and build the new part of the layout inbetween the 2 pieces. What a great idea!
-
Interesting developments. :thumb:
So are you basically building a big U shaped layout?
-
Yup, just a big folded dogbone layout...
-
Now I'm going to stir. >:D :stir:
Why don't you make it an E with an island in the middle?
You can have a center backdrop for separation of different scenes.
Longer train runs. :thumb:
-
I am thinking about that, but that's it - just thinking about it.
Not a lot of space to be honest and I don't want to use elevations at all.
-
Think a bit more.
It could add a huge amount of extra interest, especially using a few
elevations.
-
Post a plan then we can discuss a few options here.
I have a few ideas, E shape or maybe G shape, no elevations then.
:thumb:
-
The last thing I want to do is crowd the room, but best thing is to come view it for yourself. You might even get a coffee for your trouble...
-
I will come and visit.
Will let you know.
-

Hmmmm, only a few get invited..... :stir:

See above...

And you had to use a tablecloth swiped from Mike's kitchen !
Couldn't you find one lettered for Onion Pacific ? :stir: :peep:

I'll let SWAMBO know what you think of her choice... :innocent:
-
Very, Very nice Ed.....
Mmmmmm, I like Jörg's idea of the E shaped Layout.....
Ed, do you know what the number of the curves are on the current layout sections? And send me some pictures.
I can draw you some ideas with SCARM?
Cheers, Evert
-
How about you swing by for a coffee and we'll take the tape measure in hand...
-
:thumb: OK...... That can work also......
-
All the display shelves have been filled...mostly...
Looks like I can buy a few more... :innocent:
-
Now to go get some rawlbolts to put up my number plates... those things are heavy!
-
Nice Ed, love your hobby room. :thumb: :thumb:
Ciao
Werner and Colleen
-
I've now halted work on this room till I sort out the garage...
I do go sit in the room - my hifi is there and if the Pink Floyd calls, I go listen to them.
-
Slight progress... one car made it into the garage.
-
Second one will fit as well, just reverse in with a bit of speed. :stir: :peep:
-
Yeah sure. SWAMBO will be very happy for sure...🤨
-
Slight progress have been made. I have unpacked all my crates and the cupboards in the train room and garage are now filled. A lot more sorting and selling will need to happen....
Of course I need to sort out the train room AGAIN! Looks like an explosion happened.
To enter the room you have to pass this...yes, that's N Scale track up on the door sill...
-
And a teaser for the near future... anyone wants to guess what it is?
No, it's not a table...
-
Love the sign on the door. :thumb:
Shallow fish aquarium? ;D
-
Not unless they breathe air and are flatter than soles...
-
It's a bridge (sort of) to cross the window.
Let's face it this is one of the most beautiful views in the world! It shouldn't be blocked...
-
Will easily take 4 tracks - maybe 6 if I want...
Can't decide if I must use Kato Unitrack or Peco code 55... ???
-
That is a very special view.
Pity about that lamp pole.
-
I have thought about the pole having an "accident" but the added security it offers make me forgive it...
-
My thoughts as well Jörg.
Ed just let us know when to remove it.
Love the bridge.
Ciao
ColWer
-
Yea, Ed, the bridge came out extremely well, looks GREAT !!!!!
Now we need to get the rest done so we can atleast run some trains again O:-)
-
Aah the pressure... :thumb:
-
The progress that you are making in your train room is awesome Ed. I really think the shelf in front of the window is a brilliant idea. The final result will be amazing. I am hoping that one day I will make my way over there and see it myself.

So, almost a year and a half down the line, excuse the pun, I have started on the layout again.
I started a new job in August of 2021 but it was a toxic place and it took me a year to resign. I luckily found a new job straight away and its 10 million times better, just a little tiring as I have to go in to the office in Hermanus once a week.
But I finally started on the layout again…
-
just a little tiring as I have to go in to the office in Hermanus once a week.
Perfect opportunity to get a bike again. >:D ;D :peep:
Glad that you are making progress on your layout again. :thumb:
-
Awesome Ed :thumb:
Looking good.
Cheers, Evert
-
its a dream. :thumb:
-
It’s back to work tomorrow so I thought I better get something done before I take a few more rib shots…
First I had to figure out the lefthand side benchwork. Came up with this idea.
-
Then kept going with the foam.
-
View from a little further back…
-
Need to glue it all down and start on the track work. Also use this opportunity to sort out some snags in the trackwork!
-
:thumb:
Looks good, when does the first train leave the station?
-
Might be a while yet. Wiring is going to be a nightmare…
-
Baie, Baie Nice Ed.
Wiring is fine, ek sal help met daai, laat one eers die spore lê
Cheers, Evert
-
As predicted, 2023 work year started with a bang and I am working so much I have not been able to get near the layout this week... BUT the week's not over yet! :peep:
-
A little progress...
I managed to glue all the foam down using cornice adhesive and I started to lift the old track that gave issues. These were the extending tracks - PITA they are! They cause a lot more derailing than anything else. Gotta go. Managed to remove 2 so long with 3 more to go.
Have a lot more track to lift as I have 4 points that created a DCC reverse loop and I am not going to wire it up on the left side like that - I might move it over to the right side, but I have not made my mind up completely.
I also went in search of my Peco track - I have them stashed all over the place and then made a decision to use concrete sleeper track. I was going to use code 55 but I don't think I have enough to do all 4 tracks across the bridge, but I do have enough code 80. So be it then...
This then led to me searching for my fishplates. Oh boy... this drove me insane as I spent days looking for it. Seems at some point I took them out of the container I had them in for 24+ years and repacked them into a tray, which I found at last. Man, that made me very angry...but I can continue again!
Will post back pictures once I have some visual progress.
-
Made a little progress...
-
Now for the yards...
-
A little more progress. One side pretty much sorted - once I have found the needed pieces of track.
-
:thumb:
-
Mooi man....... :thumb:
-
Slowly, but progress none the less...
-
Nice, almost there, then we can run trains again :howzit:
-
A little progress… yes, all the track is down and will now be tested… exciting and scary times ahead…
-
Looking good.
How are you securing the track on the glass bridge?
-
Don't know yet - have some ideas. Watch this space... :thumb:
-
Nice :thumb:
-
Decided to do a YouTube channel to inspire me to progress even faster... but before that something amazing happened... we ran a train all the way around the layout! Only the one track at the moment (the other have a dead spot for now) and with a little voltage drop at the furthest point.
The amazing thing was we just hooked up the power supply to the mains and off she ran! I am so amazed! The Kato track does an amazing job of passing the power through the tracks and fishplates.
Go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TxoHLviIUU&t=42s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TxoHLviIUU&t=42s) to see a video of that first day's run. Also our Dachshund Zorro's dislike of the model train - that's why my layout is 1.4m off the ground! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GngIYxeTEqY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GngIYxeTEqY)

-
Very nice.
Your you tube channel now has one more subscriber. :)
-
Ah cool! I will try to make more videos to upload.
-
Work is keeping me busy and honest at the moment but I had a few mates over today. I got my SP Daylight out and was ready to pack it in when I figured out a Kato led light was shorting out the train/layout.
Made a few more videos and loaded them up on youtube… Njoy them here https://youtube.com/@edwardkeown9824
-
:thumb:
I love that Daylight.
-
So do I !
-
I need to get working on my layout again... :innocent:
-
I need to get working on my layout again... :innocent:
Makes two of us. O:-)
-
Looking good.
How are you securing the track on the glass bridge?
I have a feeling I won't have to worry too much about fixing the track to the bridge IF I secure it at the edge of the bridge on the Kato track. Think I'll be ok then. Already noticed some dust on the bridge - normal if the walkthrough to the garage and the cars are through the train room (small compromise to get a train room). I think I'll be able to just vacuum the bridge with a brush attachment. I also have a cleaning train that have a vacuum car...I might have two of them :innocent:
Think I'll be ok then. For now I need to wrap up my day job for the year so I can take a really nice 3 week holiday and work some more on the layout. :thumb:
-
So, leave came and went and I did NOTHING!!! :innocent:
-
So, leave came and went and I did NOTHING!!! :innocent:
I will have to ban you. >:D :stir: :peep:
Okay let me start running.
I also did very little, just some electrical stuff and running a few trains inside and outside. ;D
-
You got outside trains now???
-
Garden layout in planning.
-
Aha! :thumb:
-
Made some changes to the displays in the train room. Moved 2 shelves and added 6 more.
Moved these two...
-
To here
-
And added these
-
Very nice. :thumb:
-
I now wonder if I have enough to fill the shelves….?
-
I'm quite sure that you've got enough.
But if you do find some gaps on the shelves after getting out everything then just buy some more. :stir: :peep: :lamer:
-
I was thinking along these lines myself... :innocent:
-
Looks like my "vision" for the new shelves will work...
-
Testing some items...
-
Looking good. :thumb:

Baie Nice Ed.
