Title: Programming\Display Track HO, N and z
Post by: LooVille on April 22, 2020, 08:03:46 AM
Good Morning All.....

New project  :howzit:

Something I wanted to do for a very long time but never got round doing it, so now is the time.....
So I went on my PC, CorelDraw and draw a quick mock-up to get the basic wood sizes.
I drew it to be 200mm x 800mm, but when I started the build I decided to make it 900mm long.
I used 20mm x 200mm SA Pine and 20mm Styrofoam sheet.

Then, I cut all the wood and got all the parts together.
Built the frame

More to follow......

OK, so the frame is built.......
Now for sanding..... then adding a section of Masonite for the programmer 160mm x 200mm. Nailed and glue in place.
Next is to paint the wood. I used the dark stain (indonesian teak) I always use, thin it with a bit of water. I do about 3 layers with light sanding in-between.

Picture 03 is final colour

Then I cut a section of 20mm StyroFoam to fit inside the frame.
This was glued in place with Cornice Adhesive from Alcolin.

Now everything must dry properly......

Post by: LooVille on April 22, 2020, 08:54:18 AM
So, the glue set......
I glued the Styrofoam 5mm higher than the edge of the wooden frame.
So to work it off nicely, I put a bead of silicone in the corner - Picture 01
Then it was painted green - Picture 02

Picture 04 and 05, I have painted the top of the foam earth brown.

Next step is to look at the track and the cutting of the cork.
The idea of this is to leave a small section exposed to show how it is made.....

Cool, speak again tomorrow with more updates  :thumb:
Cheers.

Good Morning All.....

I started last night by cutting some cork and some more Styrofoam. - Picture 01
The idea is to lift the HO track a bit.....

Picture 02 - Think this can work well.....  :thumb:

While the Styrofoam and the Cork is drying I started to make a z scale tunnel portal.
The idea is to build the side of a mountain to hide the programmer. The HO Tunnel entrance I'm going to sculpt out of creatstone to look like a rockface.

Picture 03 - Cutting the Styrofoam with my home made hot wire cutter
Picture 04 - I took a hot needle and scribed stones into the Styrofoam
Picture 05 - Painted light grey and then painted a dark brown wash over that. Not finished yet, but it is getting there
Title: Re: Programming\Display Track HO, N and z

So, the glue for the cork of the HO was dry.
Lifted the weights and it looks awesome.....

I mixed some creatstone and filled in the gaps.... - Picture 01
Once I was happy with that I left it 15min just so that the creatstone could settle.
Picture 02 - glues on the back of the cork for the N track
I put weights on and left it over night as it was already 12 at night.....

So now this morning it looks like this..... Picture 03 and 04
Track is not fixed yet, will do that at a later stage.

Regards, Evert

Good Morning Everybody....

Did some work again last night  Not a lot, but things have to dry, so yea..... waiting, waiting.....

I finished the Tunnel Portals, made a edge from cardboard, glued it on and finished the painting. - Picture 01, 02 and 03
The portals was also glued in position on the Display track.

I cut the first profile for the mountain and glued that into position, also added some rocks as a start. Picture 04 and 05
Once this is all dry I should have a good base to start the build  :thumb:

Hope everybody stay safe and speak again soon.
Regards, Evert

I know what this is, and it has NOTHING to do with the sanctimonious "programming track" bulls#!t that the author of this thread alleges.

IT is FAKE NEWS !

It's all about bragging that "I have more toys of different sizes than you do."

Hallo Evert,

The lockdown period really awakes new projects and ideas. We love this one, always wanted one myself. We love your inventive ideas.

Can't wait for the electrics etc. and to see this Programming Display working.

Please post more pictures.  :thumb:

Good Evening Everybody,

So more work and a lot of progress was made.
Saturday I finished the frame of the mountain and I also finished the electrical work and was able to run a HO Locomotive  :thumb:

Here is the process....

Picture 01 - I decided to built a box from Hardboard as it would keep the electronics as well as the programmer safe.
Picture 02 and 03 - Styrofoam frame for the mountain.
Title: Re: Programming\Display Track HO, N and z
Post by: LooVille on April 26, 2020, 06:29:38 PM
Before I could close the mountain I had to be sure that I could fit the electronics without having to break any part of it.
So I had to work through the access panels I left in the back.

Have to say, it was difficult, but it did work.

Picture 01 - I made up a connector block with the wiring from the power and the Programmer to the HO and N track, z I will keep seperate as it use 8V and not 12V as the HO and N.
Picture 02 - Soldered wires to the ends of the HO and N track.
Picture 03 - Fitted the connector block at the bottom for easy access.
Picture 04 - View on the inside.

Last thing I did was laying the track

HO and N track glued down on the cork.

Picture 02 and 03 - I think the track is quite straight  :thumb:

HO track was cleaned and my DC transformer was hooked up and I ran a HO train for the first time  :thumb:  WHooooooHooooooo....... Was so awesome.

Last bit of electrical work to do was to fit the Programmer in to the space the mountain is hiding.

Sunday Morning first task...... Picture 01 and 02.

Then I started to close the mountain
Bandage Cloth soaked in water and then in to creatstone and then draped over the mountain Styrofoam frame.
Here I have also left a few things open or unfinished to show how I have done the build.

Next is to add the rocks to finish the mountain off, but first the cloth must dry for a bit.

Regards, Evert.

I finished the rocks yesterday also

Title: Re: Programming\Display Track HO, N and z

Now the painting is going to start.....

So I painted the grey mix I made and used that as a base as the creatstone soak a bit of the paint in.
Then I made a very watery mix of Black and some dark brown, this will go into all the cracks and crevices and should highlight that nicely.
I left that to dry overnight.

Next was to paint the final top colours.
I started with a light grey, mixed from black and white. I almost dry brushed in on, but still enough to put down paint but not fill in the cracks.
I then added so light brown to the mix, this is used very sparingly.

More to come......

..... and the final.

I then added so light brown to the mix, this is used very sparingly.
Lastly I also added some white. This is just to highlight some areas.
All the paints was added in a top down stroke fashion.

Last little bit of effect I added some dark green and brushed that on the bottom of some rocks to represent some moss growing.

Then...... something I have never tried or done.

Paint the track  :howzit:
So I tested a small test piece....
Picture 01.....

I used light brown and grey mix to do the sleepers - Pocture 02
And for the tie plates I used red, black and a bit of light brown to get a rusty colour - Picture 03

Then the painting started...... WOW  took 2hours to finish one section of Peco HO track.
But the result is awesome !!!!!! I love it......

Next the the ballast and then some more painting to show the dirt......

Enjoy and speak again soon.

Good Evening All.....

Yea, so call me crazy, but I decided to paint the N Track also...... and wow, it actually made such a big difference. :thumb:
Then I decided to stay a bit closer to scale and I did the ballasting with the WoodlandScenics Fine Ballast. I think it looks great.....

More to come soon.....
Cheers, Evert.

Lots of effort for a programming track.
But somebody has to ask, seeing as you are doing so many different scales,
what about O scale and 1 scale track?  ;D

Well, I'm going to use it for display also, and to show how I do things, so that is why I make so much effort. And, I REALLY enjoy doing this  :thumb: :thumb:
Mmmmmm, bigger scales...... no, I have to concentrate on what I can and know. HO, N and z I can fix, program and service.....

Good Morning All,

I worked some more and got the ballasting done for the HO track.
First time ever I do this, so to get the scale correct I went to Youtube again and WoodlandScenics used the Medium Ballast and mixed a bit of Fine together to give it some variety, so this is what I have done. Picture 01 and 02

Picture 03 - I also had to put some white glue on the shoulders else the ballast just fell off. Then I glued it all together with the soapy water glue mixture.
Picture 04 - To get the dirty black grime in the middle of the track...... Mmmmmmm...... I did not want to paint it, so I decided to leave the track to dry for 30min or so.
Then I added some black paint into the soapy water glue mixture and add drops just in the middle of the track. it flow nicely into the ballast. I did this until I was happy with the result. Think I did 3 drops or so with 15 to 30 min periods in between each.

I'm quite happy with the results.

Regards, Evert  :thumb:

Hi,
yes I have also had the problem of the ballast falling off if you do not first apply some glue to the sides
and apply the ballast to that and let it dry.
I see the termites have been very busy on the one sleeper.  >:D
Have fun, looking very good. :thumb:
Title: Re: Programming\Display Track HO, N and z

Now that the track is finished and working it is time to add some grass and other details.

I used my trusted WoodlandScenics Bushes and the Noch Grass Tufs.
Then I also want to do something extra as it is HO and things are bigger and mutch more detail can be added.

Picture 04 and 05
So, I took some Sisal Twine and cut a few pieces. This I unraveled and made into small random bunches.
Once the glue is dry I will paint them slightly green with red at the top. Think it will create some nice interest for the scene.

Cool, enjoy the long weekend and speak again soon.

Looking very good.  I reckon the ballast needs a very light weathering of dirt, soot or grime to make it really pop.

Good Morning All.....

@Steve, yes I will do some more weathering on everything once I'm done. Still have to do the smoke stains on the tunnels too.

So I finished the grass yesterday and this morning I painted the grass I made green with white flowers.
I also added some red Noch flower tufs. Think it looks good.....

I really like the way it turned out.

The the last two pictures I thought I'll pit it outside, just for fun and to see the effect..... WOW  the colours is just awesome......

Painted the outside of the mountain section black to finish it off nicely.
Then also glues some black foam rubber to the bottom of the module.

Finished it off nicely  :thumb:

Post by: LooVille on May 05, 2020, 09:25:53 AM
So, as a display, I was thinking of fitting a HO, N and z scale figure.

To do this I decided to build a section of a Platform, decided to do it in N Scale.
I had to scratch build it as I do not have a kit.

I measured the space I had as well as the height to the doors of a coach.
Then I did a quick drawing on CorelDraw to get the measurements correct.

I used 2mm CardBoard to build it and some Lego Blocks to keep everything square.  Piture 01.
Then for the deck, I used a very fine grid sanding paper (P180), I scribed some stones on the edge and put a layer of glue over the edge to smooth it slightly. Picture 02.
For the sides of the walls I printed some concrete pictures. Picture 03.
I wrapped the sides with the printed paper. Picture 04

Title: Re: Programming\Display Track HO, N and z
Post by: LooVille on May 05, 2020, 10:32:47 AM
The Deck I painted grey with a dark brown wash to show the scribe lines I made for the edge stones.
Then I weathered it a little also..... Picture 01.
Lastly I painted the yellow safety line, I dry brushed it on so that it looked weathered and worn. I also painted the edge of the platform white. Picture 02.

Then it was test fitted, 2mm to high, so I had to cut the foam so that it could be sunken into the base. Picture 03.

Everything was fitted and I think it came out great
I do have N and z scale figures, just have to get HO figures still.

But for now, I'm happy with how it look.

Hi Evert, after following the progress of your really super project I had an idea to make a very low key Display Track.

Not as smart as yours, but practical.

I did a trial with my Grassmaker with 6mm "grass" fibres.

See the pics below.
Title: Re: Programming\Display Track HO, N and z
Post by: ColWer on May 08, 2020, 11:38:52 AM
Starting to understand the "grass" maker I took a piece of chip board and cut it into a rectangle.

Placed a piece of track on the wood and glued the ballast with cold glue / water mix and left to dry.

Unfortunately no pictures of the making of said display board.

I then put Heki Styropor imbossed with a wall motive around said display board and "planted" the 6mm "grass'.

Let it settle for 20 minutes and vacuumed the excess fibres for later use.

Below pictures of the end result of the Display Track.

I placed the display track on the layout to make use of the layout as the background.

Two days of fun whilst waiting for the glue and paint to dry on the layout.

I like that..... The edge using the stone is a brilliant idea.

I still want to get myself a Static Grass applicator, but no stock in South Africa at the moment.
I want to add some 2mm to the z and 4mm to my N Layout. Will make some awesome effects and give more interest to the layout.

Thank you for sharing
