Title: End of steam trains in Western Cape?
Post by: trainmaster on February 25, 2020, 12:39:33 AM
After the suddenly end of operation by Reefsteamers in Germiston - thei operated nearly 20 years - the main reason are the rail access prices increase drastically. An economic operation is not possible again.   (The Sunday Times, 16 February 2020)
And now, the CRC stops successfull steam train operations from Cape Town to Elgin (Railway Market) at the end of the month February 2020. Derick Du Toit, CEO of Ceres Rail Company hopes, that these circumstances will be temporary and that operations can resume soon. Also in this case, the main reason are the high rail access prices from Transnet and PRASA (Metro Rail). For this reason, the routes to Stellenbosch and to Simon's Town had to be abandoned.
