Hi everybody,
I have two of the older production Märklin BR 38's which lack a bit of detail.
These models where first produced in the later 1960's so I guess for the time they where quite good.
Well I want them a bit better.
For some time I've been considering what to do to them, especially the lack of brakes makes them look
rather naked around the bottom. ::)
So I've ordered some parts from Weinert in Germany and have started today to do some prep work.
First up the cylinder protection tubes at the front of the cylinders.
I had to shorten the steel valve gear rod that is fitted from the factory.
Red arrow of first photo.
Second photo holding the cast brass parts in place to see for fit.
-
First one test fitted.
Second photo note the other side still original.
-
Brake parts that need to be fitted.
Sorry for unclear photo, sometimes a bit difficult to get these small cameras
to focus where you want.
Second photo of the new front buffer bar.
I will have to mill some material of the old frame to fit this so hold thumbs please.
-
Nice looking parts! :thumb:
-
Wow - mini finger work...
I've got problems by 1:22,5, nothing works in 1:87.
Lot of patients, well done!
Cheers

Hi,
a bit of work today, first up I made a holder onto which I can
mount the frame which can then in turn be mounted on my milling machine.
First photo.
Second photo shows the loco frame mounted on the milling machine and the first hole drilled
for the rear brake shoe. :thumb:
-
Nice work Jörg. :thumb: :thumb:
Love the Proxxon tool
Ciao
W&C
-
Hi,
yes that Proxxon tool is nice. ;D
Still learning how to use it.
Small update for tonight.
Four brake shoes on the right side of the frame are now fitted loosely.
First photo.
Must now figure out how to mount the lower center twin brake shoe as the mounting that's
on the casting from Weinert will cause it to clash with the center stud pick up shoe. The curse of the
three rail users. :peep:
In photo two I hold the part more or less in position with needle nose pliers.
-
-
Yes big Ed, ditto.....
-
Nice, that is going to be a VERY nice Loco once all the details are fitted.
Awesome work Jörg :thumb:
-
Aloha,
been a while. :-[
Lots of other priorities, but my mind never stops thinking about my trains.
I had some problems on how to do the front of this loco, nothing wanted to fit, but this afternoon
I found a nice photo of a BR 38 nearly directly from the front and I could see my mistake.
The side beams where the puffer beam mounts onto I always had to far out, the loco needs to be much narrower in front.
Photo one the arrow points to the parts that I am talking about.
Second photo a side view, I will virtually have to cut the front of the body off.
-
Nice Jörg! Keep them pics coming. :D ;)
-
Wow, awesome Jörg,
That is going to look stunning.
-
Small update tonight.
After careful thought on how and what to cut off I finally had the courage today
to use the hacksaw on the body of this loco.
So far I only cut off the puffer beam.
Being very careful with this project.
First photo shows what I cut off.
Second photo the new puffer beam loosely in place, I'm chuffed. :thumb:
-
Nice Jörg!
-
Hi,
a bit of progress was made today.
It was quite tricky to secure the body to the milling machine table as the locos body is round.
Nevertheless I manged to do some milling.
First photo lining it up.
Second photo starting to take shape.
-
First photo checking for fit, got to get the curve right.
Second photo having a look how it all might come together.
-
As can be seen by my red circles the loco body is quite a bit wider on the old Märklin model
so I will most probably have to trim the loco a bit.
Will take my time and consider how best to do this.
-
Hi everybody,
managed to do a bit in the week and this morning.
I lightly glued the buffer beam and side parts to the body this week and this
morning I trimmed the chassis of the loco to fit.
Loosely fitted the drive wheels to place the loco on the track to check for correct height of buffer beam.
To high so back to the drawing board.
Photos are always nice.
First photo chassis in the body after trimming.
Second photo loco on my layout without the front bogie.
-
First photo with the front bogie loosely in place.
I see I have to modify this as well.
Its actually a Fleischmann part of a BR 78.
Second photo a side shot showing what its looks like now.
-
I have to cut off the parts on the Fleischmann bogie that I have marked with the black arrow.
These are on the buffer beam already on the new parts, green arrow.
-
Awesome Jörg! :thumb:
-
Good evening,
I did cut off the parts from the Fleischmann bogie.
See photo one.
I also just to look how it fit temporally mounted the piston push rod tubes.
Also to make sure these don't clash with the wheels in the corners.
Photo two.
-
Next step is to remove the old cast on lights.
To be replaced by separate cast brass lamps.
Blue arrow.
Also the complete front section must be lowered, red arrow.
I will most probably have to scratch build a new front for the loco.
Then I will also reduce the cap at the black circle.
I will have to order more parts from Germany.
-
Exactly how much of the original loco will be left I wonder... :peep:
-

Not much I think, lets see what happens.
In the meantime its giving me lots of pleasure.
-
It's going to look so cool once done...... Really one BIIIIIG job...... :thumb:
-
Hi,
no actual work has been done in the last few days on this project,
but some research and looking for suitable material.
I found two etched brass sheets that have a pattern on the one side.
Exactly as I need for this loco in front. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
One is 0.3 mm thick and the other is 0.5 mm thick.
The 0.3 looks finer and I will use that.
Photo one the two sheets.
Photo two the part of the loco that has to be removed complete with the
old cast on imitation lamps.
-
Some more parts.
Lamps, these will have to be milled out a bit to make
space for some very tiny Led's.
Photo one.
Photo two shows a few other parts that I have here.
-
Nice parts. Will make a stunning locomotive. :thumb:
-
This is exciting.....
-
WOW.... That is going to look awesome once done.....
-
Hi,
I used the hacksaw a bit more today. ;D
I have cut off the front section now completely.
Also the upper headlight has been removed and filled in.
In the second photo there are two arrows pointing at the extension, I must still figure out
how far to trim those back or do I remove them completely.
-
I also found some nice small brass valve wheels, so I can now remove
the cast on ones and have separate parts on either side. :thumb:
-
Sjoe, that's a serious rebuild  Can't wait for the final result.....
-
Hi there Jörg,
Serious building in process. Should have all this on video and on Youtube.
Great work. Very nice! :thumb:
Ciao
-
Hi there,
this project has been standing for a while, but on Sunday I spent some time with this loco again.
Although there are other things to do I decided to give this project some attention.
I had already roughly cut out the buffer beam platform in front.
So now I drilled the holes for the two lanterns, the hand rails for the shunter and the two cuts
where I need to bend the outer sections up, the middle stays flat and must still be shortened.
Photo one shows me holding the buffer beam with the platform on top and the two lanterns in loosely.
Photo two shows the platform drilled and cut.
Now I must make a mandrill of the correct diameter to bent the two end pieces up.
I do not have any accurate measurements for this so guesstimate the dimensions from photos.
-
Nice Jörg, coming on very nicely! :thumb:
Ciao

Hi there,
a bit of progress was made today.
In the week I had prepared the base for the buffer beam platform as photo one shows.
Today I soldered the base and platform together and then did the two 90° bends as the second photo shows.
Third photo shows me checking the fit of the bend radius. Looks good.
-
Then all parts where once again cleaned so that the solder can join the parts properly.
Then the buffer beam was soldered to the platform and then the two side parts.
First photo.
Second photo shows everything from underneath, no glue was used, all soldered.
-
Then I opened up the holes for the lanterns again and loosely fitted them.
This is what it all looks like now.
Enjoy.
I'm quite happy with my work. :thumb:
P.S. The two sections that are bent up still need to be shortened, I will do this at a later stage when I have worked out the correct
height of this.
-
Hi Jörg, this is so awesome. Really nicely done. :thumb:
Looking forward to the next episode. 8)

Next episode will take some time.
Must first get some more parts from Germany.
-
Nice...... I have seen the parts and it is absolutely awesome, the detail is amazing....
Nice work Jörg.
-
Next episode will take some time.
Must first get some more parts from Germany.
Postal Service back to normal?

Postal Service back to normal?
Nope, I think that will still take some time.
Anyway I have spent a bit of time this weekend on this project again.
First photo shows how it looked before,
second photo after I had used the hacksaw and cut off the original light bulb holder.
Then I milled the front face straight and temporally glued that new front portion on.
Last two photos.
Its a bit to high, but that will be sorted in the next few days.

Looking good Jörg. :thumb:
All the cutting etc. on the static mat? :innocent:
Have a great day.

Mmmmmmmm....... Nice...... The Detail of the Brass stuff is just amazing...... :thumb:
-
Hi everybody,
I know what I'll be doing over the holidays. :thumb:
It looks like a lot of stuff, but some are double as I was not sure which item would work best.
-
Awesome Jörg! :thumb:

Hi everybody,
so last night I had no feeling to work on my layout and decided to have a look at
all these parts that arrived some weeks ago.
Most important to me was the smoke box door in front.
I had ordered two as I was not sure which would work better.
I unfortunately discovered that the Märklin boiler is to big, I guess that they
designed the boiler with a bigger diameter to get the motor and gearbox in there.
So it looks like I won't be able to use these parts.
Have a look, you can clearly see that the new parts are smaller.
-
Do you have a picture to refer to?
Ciao
ColWert
-
Bummer... :(
-
Ai........ That's not good.
Will have to see if you can use the current one and just detail it nicely.
-
Yes I will have to consider how and what I can do with the
original part.
Time will tell.
-
Aloha,
small update on this project.
Lights.
I ordered two tiny 0402 warm white Led's from Germany that arrived with all the other parts.
As I know I need to order more I wanted to check how I like these.
I have a few of these brass casting headlights, but there is no hole for wires and the inside can't really accommodate
anything.
So I milled out the inside.
Then I removed the casting spruce and milled the foot straight.
As the foot is only 2 mm wide I did not want to use the brass tubes that I have as these are 1,5 or 1,57 mm in diameter.
This would make the lantern casting a bit to weak I think.
So I took a 1,5 mm brass tube and placed it in my mill and while it was running carefully filled the tube thinner.
Now 1,2 mm.
Then a 1,2 mm hole in the lantern.
-
Then I soldered the tube into the casting.
With that the time came to feed the wires through from one of the Led's, connect the
supplied resistor and connect.
For now I'm using a 9 volt battery and the Led is not secured in the lantern.
The lanterns will be painted white inside and then the Led glued in.
Either I will get the original Weinert lens or fill it up with clear coat.
But for now I'm happy with the result and will be ordering a few more of these Led's.
-
Hi Jörg, very nice! :thumb:
Where did you get the white Led's from?
Ciao
colWer
-
Its warm white, from Weinert.
Come with copper wires soldered on already and a 1 KΩ resistor.
Order number is 90346
-
The old and the new.
-
Next step. ;D
I'm enjoying this.
Instead of keeping the shape of the boiler and having small cast on sun shield for the cap front windows,
Märklin just made it on big casting.
In the first photo it shows what I all have to remove.
The white arrow points at the hand rail which is also going to be replaced.
Second photo with the new sun shields just on the old ones.
Last photo the sun shields on their own, of course the spruce must still be removed.
-
Then new smoke deflectors.
Lets see how I manage to mount these.
-
So first cut has been made, still needs a lot of cleaning which will need
to be done very carefully as I don't want to damage the body.
First photo just the cut, as far as I can get in with a small hacksaw.
Second photo with new sun shield placed loosely onto the opening.
-
This is going to be a seriously awesome locomotive once done...
-
Thanks Ed, I hope it works out the way I plan.
But I'm working of photos which are often at an angle so to judge the measurements
is rather tricky.
-
Good news then because no one will be able to know if it is wrong or not! :thumb:
-
Haha, the problem is that it can easily look out of proportion.
So taking it slowly on this project.
-
Wow, rather you than me. Nice :thumb:

-
Good evening everybody.
Tonight I spent some time filing.
The proof.
;D
-
I have now removed the whole blob of casting around the boiler
and cap.
Was very careful to get the curve of the boiler as close as possible.
Quite happy with my work for tonight. :thumb:
-
Did you gring up something or did all those filings come from that one place
-

Yes all from this place.

That is a lot of Zinc, nice filing there Jörg. :thumb:

Hi everybody,
some more work has been done.
I was looking at the cast on hand rails on the cab as well as the windshield which is cast on in this model
instead of being a transparent "glass" shield.
So I mounted the body in the vice of my mill and started making more metal filings. ;D
Photo one shows the original with the white arrows pointing at the offending details.
Photo two shows the clear windshield made by Weinert Modellbau.
Sorry for the out of focus photo, but its hit or miss where this camera decides to focus.
-
The result of some drilling and milling work.
Photo one shows me starting to drill the second hole, in the hole to the right the small brass casting that holds the 0,2 mm
brass wire in already placed.
-
Windshield in as well. :thumb:
I am considering to also replace the cast on hand rail and at least the pipe to
the steam whistle with brass fittings. White arrows.
-
Nice Jörg. :thumb:
Ciao

Nice work... :thumb:
Keep the filings - we can melt it up into more Marklins... :peep:
-
Wow Jörg, this is going to be a masterpiece once done
-
:howzit:
Nearly four years since the last post here. :lamer:
Somehow with me working on the layout all the time this project ended up in a box stached away.
Yesterday after cleaning my work bench a bit I decided to pull this out of its box.
Sorted parts which I had received after packing it away.
I now have the first handrail loosely fitted, still one more hole to drill.
-
Nice :thumb:
Yes, make the rest of us look bad, will you… :innocent:
-
Hi all,
a bit of progress on this project.
The tender doors that close the gab between the tender and cab.
These are cast onto the tender at the factory.
I have a pair of brass doors that are hinged, so that they can open and close. :thumb:
First photo shows the original tender, black arrow shows the door that now has to be removed.
Red arrow the hinge pin that needs to be replaced.
Second photo I holding the brass door in place to see for fit.
-
First photo I've cut away the door.
Second photo hinge pin is in and the door can move.
Still need to figure out how to mount the tiny spring so that the door is in closed position
and only opens when its pushed open.
-
Nice detail. 8)
-
Hi all,
slowly but surely I'm making progress on this project.
Today I temporary fitted the movable plate between loco and tender. We don't want the stoker
to fall in between the two.
-
I've also cut out the front of the boiler/smoke box.
I have a beautiful cast brass one from Weinert.
The light casting is soldered in and I had to modify that first to be able to
fit an Led and then mill a channel for the wires into the underside. Second photo.
-
WOW, awesome work Jörg.....
Yea, like Ed said, making the rest of us look bad.
Going to be one awesome looking Loco once done......
but there is still home for me, I still have a D51 Gauge 1 full brass to build, one day......
Cheers, Evert
-
I know! Making us look bad AND lazy...oh wait, that's only me... :peep:
-
Hi all,
thanks for the positive comments.
I've been spending time on the tender.
First I removed and opened the cast on water hatch.
Then I made a brass ring and prepped the Weinert water hatch with a hinge.
My plan is to have this working with a small servo in the tender. :)
Then I removed the cast on lights and hand rails.
Replaced with brass parts.
The lights will get individual Led's.
-
Nice :thumb:
