I have a beautiful Roco BR 012 passenger express loco that I converted to digital with a Märklin
60905 decoder some years ago. Runs very well and is beautifully detailed.
I spent some time thinking where am I going to post this thread as its not a Märklin loco, but as its
for the Märklin system I've put it here.
I've decided that this loco should get a sound system and some other features.
I must still get a sound decoder for this loco, but for now I'm doing the prep.
Of course the first question to ask where to fit the speakers.
Very little space in this loco. The tender has the motor and drive as well as a drive shaft to the engine
to drive the wheels as well.
Basically no space in the tender so I had to find some space in the loco.
There is a big solid weight in the loco that also has the function to hold the screws which hold the loco together.

So today I clamped the weight in my vice and attacked is with hack saw and files. >:D
This is the result.
Yes I can get two cube speakers in there. Awesome. :thumb:
The lower plastic part of the boiler will have to be trimmed a bit.

One feature that I like on my locos are the maintenance lights for the drive wheels.
With the small Led's available nowadays this can easily be done.
Just needs some very careful soldering. ;)

The color of the Led's will be changed, I've had good results by painting them with different color
paint.

Aloha,
good news I received my Loksound V5 decoder for this loco last week so this project
will be completed now. Got some other goodies as well, but more about that some other time.
I have now fitted the two speakers into the boiler.
Also found a spot where I could mount the two resistors for the drive wheel lights.
Photo one shows the speakers, the holes drilled into the bottom of the boiler for the sound to exit
as well the two resistors mounted on the loco frame.
Second photo shows the speakers connected together.
Hopefully I will be able to get the loco running again this week.
The correct sound file has been downloaded and installed in the decoder. :thumb:

Hi Niel,
I like to use cream colored enamel paint.
I have seen overseas that there is a permanent marker type of pen with a orange color.
I have sometimes also spray painted complete circuit boards for coach lights with a rattle can.
Basically anything that will change the color of these bright white Led's to something resembling older
style lights.

As a bonus I found a Roco spare part file this weekend of the BR 44 steamer
with sound, surprise the Roco technicians placed the speakers in exactly the same spot as myself.
