Title: Märklin BR 05 with ESU Loksound
Post by: capeklr on August 09, 2018, 05:16:24 PM
Hi,

another conversion is completed.
This loco came from Märklin with a decoder and sound module.
The steam whistle sounded ridiculous in my opinion so it just had to go.
At the same time I also fitted warm white Led's.
First photo Loco opened and checking how much space there is.
Second photo no matter how the speaker will not really fit in the smoke box.

Seeing that I want to use a ESU 21 MTC adapter board to mount the decoder I need a
base to mount this on. Made one from vero board and stuck the adapter board on with
two sided tape.
Yes it had to be mounted at a slight angle.

Seeing that the Led's for the rear lights are mounted underneath the original decoder I had to
do the same here.
Glued the Led's on standing up and then the next day with a little bit bigger solder blob connected
them to the board.
Working.  :thumb:

Then I started testing and setting all the CV's.
Had a problem in that the smoke unit stayed on permanently. ???
I checked and rechecked my work, a few times using my multimeter and check
all connections for shorts to any others and everything showed up perfect.
So I studied the ESU decoder instructions a bit more, there are so many CV's to adjust
and set up its scary.
This morning I found my ESU decoder tester and immediately connected that up and plugged
in the decoder.
Well here it worked correctly and I could switch F 1 on and off as I pleased.
So the problem had to be in the loco.
Dismantled it again and rechecked every connection and solder joint with a magnifying glass.
Ah, I found a tiny solder blob between two solder pads.  :-[
Removed that and everything is perfect.  :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
Fitted a 2200µf cap and but everything back together.
Stay tuned for the next project.  :)
