Good Morning All,
I was unpacking all my Grandfarther's train stuff and I came across this drawing (1st Pic)
I think I found it way back in the day in one of the Hobby Bulletins from my Grandfarther.
I remember when I was still at school or just after when I was studying I built this out of paper, but have no idea what happend to the model.
So I thought this is much nicer than the kit I bought from Walters, so I decided to attempt a build.
I came in contact with a guy in Holland and I received about 180 pictures from him.
A friend of mine have a laser cutter so we are going to cut all the pieces from 1.5mm Plywood.
So, I sat down and the past 3 weeks I drew all the parts for the building.
I bought a 2nd hand Windmill from Faller which I will change to fit.
This weekend we will cut the wood and then I will start the build.
Enjoy and speak to everybody again soon.
Cheers,
Evert

This has awesome written all over. :thumb: Will follow this with great interest.

That will happen AFAIK...

Good Morning All,
So it was the BIG day on Sunday.
I visited my friend Arno (1st Pic) and we cut all the sections out of 1.5mm ply.
Awesome, and so incredibly precise and fine.
He built the cutter himself and it is just amazing.
Now I have to paint and build  Biiiiiiiig Job ahead still.
Cheers,
Evert

Oh, and yes, I will fit a motor. The Windmill in my Town already have a motor and it is awesome.
-
That is so cool
Does your friend do work for other people? I have been drawing up a structure kit for sometime and would like to have it cut.
-
Wesley, I am certain these boys can/will help you. Just ask the right people... :peep:

Hi Wes,
I'm sure he will be able to.
I will have a chat to him and see what he say.
With what did you draw and on what do you want to cut?
Regards,
Evert
-
Thanks bud
I design i rhino Cad and would use thin mdf or ply wood as the sub structure, then build my weathered planking over that.
Chat to him and let me know what he will charge.
Cheers

Good Morning All,
What a awesome weekend away.
Good family time and just relax and not thinking about work or the city life.
When I had time I sat with the sawmill build. I have to say it is working quite well.
Picture 01 - Starting the build process
Picture 02 - I scribed lines on to the face of the wood 1mm apart to show the planks.
Picture 03, 04 - Now to start the assembly, I used Lego blocks to keep everything straight and square.
Picture 05 - First building, all the walls are together, now it is ready for paint.
Enjoy the week and speak again soon.
Cheers,
Evert

Are you hi-jacking your sons Lego? >:D
Actually a clever idea to use some Lego for this. :thumb:

Good Morning All,
I guess a update is in order
I drew up all the windows and doors for my friend, so that it can be 3D printed.
Took a while to setup, but once I have done one or two it went quite quick.
So another step is finished.
-
Right, Long weekend work
Did not get as much done as I wanted, but progress was made, so I'm happy.
Started with the Deck.
Sanded and Glued all the parts together.
Then I placed it on some masking tape and I'm busy with the braising parts at the bottom.
Regards,
Evert

I love that last picture, fantastic work. :thumb:
I would struggle to do that in HO scale, never mind N scale.
So when are you doing one in Z scale? >:D

Good Morning All,
Hope everybody had a good Christmas and New Year celebrations. All the best for 2019 and I'm sure we will see some awesome stuff in the year ahead.
I had some time off so I could also work on the sawmill again
All the buildings is together now so I mixed so cream paint and painted the outside of both buildings. I thinned the paint a little as I wanted to keep the grain of the wood.
Had to give it 2 to 3 coats of paint, but it looks good.
I then painted the inside of all the windows dark green.
I also stained the deck, I like the colour, think I'll leave it like that.
Next step is to cut all the paper strips for the back wall as it is covered in clapboard. That is dark brown/black.
Then I can fit all the windows. I will make them myself as the resin for the 3D printers got so expensive ??? almost R1k to get it done !!!!! No way !!!!!
Will send updates soon again.
Cheers,
Evert.

Evert,
What are you looking at for the windows?
R1k is somewhat extreme for printed windows. You can almost get a whole litre of resin for that price (well it depends on the brand) so you could print a boat load of windows for th eprice.

Hi Evert,
I like that wooden deck, that really came out fantastic. :thumb:
Nice progress, this project is coming together nicely.
All the best for 2019.

I'm not to sure..... ???
I have already drawn up everything, bottom of page 1.
Do you have a contact?

Evert,
He must be using some good stuff in that case. Possibly SLA rather than DLP resins or something.
Send me a copy of your files and I'll see what I can do for you.

"Then I can fit all the windows. I will make them myself as the resin for the 3D printers got so expensive ??? almost R1k to get it done !!!!! No way !!!!!"
Hi Evert,
Something I tried many moons ago that works great for industrial buildings :
Print a design for the windows (drawn in CAD, Excel or whatever) and print on overhead transparency projector sheets. I have done this in black but maybe it could be done in colour on certain printers. The trick it to cut the window surrounds a fair bit wider than the window, to allow for glueing that does not spill onto the visible portions of the window. You also have to be careful not to smear the printing on the sheets.
Cheers,
Steve

Good Morning All,
I thought I'll post the update for what is happening.
Freightcars, really helped a lot with this one, can't wait to see or have the final product in my hands.
Thank you so much for the help with the Windows and the Doors. :thumb: :thumb:
I will paint them white and then it will be fitted inside the window frames already cut and painted in the walls.
Some of the Doors is a normal door with a frame and a few is sliding that is fitted on the outside of the building.
Cheers and I will update again soon.
-
Bloody hell. Those are tiny
Going to look good in place.

love it :thumb: :thumb:

I got stuck down a rabbit hole and haven't gotten back to these this week. I need to send those to you.
No problem helping out. It's been an interesting test to throw at the printer.
-
Good morning All,
So last week I received the package from Freightcars  Thank you so much, it really came out GREAT :thumb:
I started to fit the windows this weekend, going to take a while as I have to sand each tiny window and door slightly to make them fit 100%
Once made to fit, I will remove it again and spray them white.
Then it will be fitted permanently.
Here is some pictures.
Enjoy.
Cheers,
Evert
-
Hi Evert,
those windows look fantastic. :thumb:
Have fun with this project.
-
Good Morning All :)
Small update from my side.
Did some more work on the windows.
I finished the one wall and sprayed the Windows white.
I think it is looking GREAT !!!!!! :thumb: I love it.....
Cheers and speak again.
-
It sure do look stunning. Well done to you and Freightcars :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
-
Excellent work. :thumb:
Came out really very nice.
-
That did come out great.
Looking forward to more.
-
Good Morning All....
Hope everybody had a good weekend.
I did some work on my Windmill again :)
Build is not going as fast as I would like, but hopefully I can focus on it now and get is finished.
To finish the windows I had to first finish the walls. The walls and the out buildings on the water side is for some reason clapboard ans a dark brown colour where the rest of the building is yellow painted. So I cut 2mm strips out os paper and glued it on with a overlap of 1mm.
Took forever, but well worth the effort.
I still have to finish the 2 out buildings and then I will paint it and fit the windows.
Cheers Evert
-
Wow, that looks like a lot of work.
Well done, once painted that will look very nice. :thumb:
-
Good Morning All,
As promised I worked a little bit more :thumb:
I managed to finish the walls, luckily the rest is not clapboard, so I could just scribe them to show vertical planks.
Then I painted a medium brown as a base and once it was dry I painted a second coat with a wood stain. I think it worked quite well.
I will just spray it with a matt clear coat as the stain ends up being glossy.
Then I fitted, sprayed and final fit a few windows again.
Enjoy the pictures.
Cheers,
Evert

Good Morning All,
So, another challange was to build the roof. I wanted to buy the tile roof sheets but the Noch one I wanted @ R200 !!!!! No.....
So I decided to build a Shingle Roof. I have seen Jason Jenson do this and I think I can make it happen. Here is a link to his video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6TuBDZzzSg)
1st - I glued on a base for the roof.
2nd - I measured 3mm on paper and cut strips.
3rd - I cut the tiles, random and left 1mm of the 3mm strip. (3rd pic)
4th - I started to glue the strips on the base on the building.
5th - Once it was dry I randomly lifted a few tiles.
continue......
-
Last part.....
6th - First coat of brown paint
7th - I randomly painted a few tiles red
8th - I dry brushed dark and light grey over it all.
I'm quite happy with the end result, it took forever to do, but it is well worth the effort.
This week it will be the other side of the building.
Enjoy the pictures.
Regards,
Evert
-
Wow.
That came out very well. :thumb:
Are you trying to give the likes of Luke Towan competition?
-
Very nice and crazy... :thumb:
-
Good Morning All.....
Hope everybody had a great easter weekend. We went to Hermanus again and it was GREAT. Really enjoy the relaxing and just be out of the city and the norm.
I took my SawMill with again :thumb:
So when I had some time, I worked on it.
Have to say got quite a lot done.
Roofs are all finished as well as all the windows.
So next is the base of the WindMill and the walkway around it. It is built already, just need to finish the painting and then fit.
Enjoy the pictures and speak again soon.
Cheers,
Evert
-
Hi Evert,
I love that roof with some of the tiles not lying flat.
Really makes that roof three dimensional.
Regards Jörg.

So do I - makes it very real!
-
Good Morning All,
I worked a little bit more last night
I made the Facia's out of 1mm x 2mm L shaped paper.
I first tried to paint it green, but the paint flattened the paper and made it unusable. Then my wife told my why not use a Sharpie.
Awesome idea and it worked really well.
Next will be the gutters, but will first have to buy some C or U shaped styrene from the EverGreen product range.
Enjoy the pictures :thumb:
-
:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
-
Good Morning All,
I spent some good time in the hobby room this weekend
I finished the flat roof also, black sand paper I painted grey.
Then I finished all the fascias.
Once everything was dried I decided it is time to fit the deck. So on it went.
I left that overnight to dry properly.
Then I started with the bracing between the building and the deck. I first tried to cut strips from wood, but it did not work and then I still have to paint them white.
So I ended up using stripstyrine from the Ever Green range. Works very easy and looks good. I just gave them a light sand to get rid of the glossy finish.
Nice progress, and I'm really excited at the way the model is turning out.
Enjoy the pictures.
Cheers,
Evert :thumb:
-
Fantastic. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Good Morning All.....
Next Challenge..... the brickwork under the SawMill
The center section consist out of some walls and the rest is open with pillars. This was also where they store the wood to dry.
Pic one is the actual building with the brickwork close-up. I still have to paint everything, but will do that once all the parts have been made.
I'm using plastic brick sheets and cut, sand and glue to make the parts.
Took me the whole evening just to make those two.
Enjoy the pictures.
Regards,
Evert

Good grief! My version would have stood on the grass.... :eek2:
-
The extra dimension looks Awesome. :thumb:
-
Good Morning All,
Very small update.
So I managed to do some more brickwork.....
Think once it is painted finished off and glued in place it will look awesome !!!!! :thumb:
Cheers,
Evert
-
Good Morning All,
Worked a little more on the Mill this weekend
Got the Brickwork finished as well as the built of the ramp (logs gets pulled in from the water) and the delivery side (planks and waste go on to train and or truck)
Hope you all have a good week and speak again soon.
Cheers,
Evert

Good Morning All,
So, I decided to take on the rain and get the voting out the way early in the morning.
So the rest of the day was mine....
I was playing very nicely again.
Finished the arches above the brick pillars.
I also finished all the bracings for the deck.
Last two pictures, I was just playing around...... Can't wait for it to be finished. Will look awesome !!!!!
Next is the handrail for the deck.
Hope you all have a good day.
Cheers, and speak again.
Evert
-
Wow.
:thumb:
-
Looking good!!!! :thumb:
-
Good Morning All.......
OK, so this is pretty much the last big challenge for the build.
The handrails is the last thing I have to build.
So I started last night. Took me an hour just to cut them, 32 posts !!!!
Wood Glue is not working because of the angle, so Superglue it is.
Cheers,
Evert.
-
That will test your patience. ;D
-
Good Morning All,
Friday Evening it was me and the Handrails.....
Well I got them all glued in to place and painted green.
Then on Saturday I test fit all the tops of the rails. Worked 100% :thumb:
I sprayed them all white and it was final glued into place.
Then for the in between sections.... I cut 1mm paper strips.
I first measure every hand rail, so that I could glue the strips all at the same height.
This took a really looooong time, but it cam out GREAT !!!!! I love it.....
Enjoy the Pictures.....
Regards,
Evert

Sunday it was time for the actual Mill
The Faller Kit I bought was already built, but not very well, so fixing a few things some sanding and re-paint.
The walls of the kit is also brick, and it should be wood, so I had to change that.
So I cut some paper and scribed 1mm lines on to the paper.
Glued it in place and then painted the same colour as the rest of the building.
The Grass Roof was also way to light, so I had to darken the plastic colour.
Next, I have to go and buy some green spray. Then I can paint the structure of the beams for the direction turning of the mill.
Also the blades must go green.
Cool, enjoy the pictures.....
Regards,
Evert
-
Good Morning All,
Yesterday after work I quickly went to Clowns and bought some Green Tamiya Spray and some C channel.
Smallest they make is 1mm x 1,5mm.
I re-built the frame for the turning of the Mill and sprayed it green. It is gloss, so I still have to tone it down, and it is to bright, but that is easy.
I also painted and fitted the gutters, little bit oversize, but I think it round the building off nicely. Just need to fit the down pipes still.
Hopefully I can do this tonight
Regards,
Evert
-
:thumb:
-
Good Morning All,
Small update from last night......
I painted the green frame as well as the blades with a brown and black water mixture.
This is to tone down the brightness of the Racing Green as well as to make it Matt and not Glossy.
Have to say, it worked better than I expected.
Then I also painted the tips of the frame white with some red caps.
Think I will tackle the doors of the building next
Cheers,
Evert :thumb:
-
Good Morning All......
Small things was done the past week. And I was in bed with Flu :(
I made the sails for the Blades......
Cutting it from tissue paper and colour it black with a Sharpie.
I also printed a 3mm diameter star for the centre. Think it really came out awesome.
More to follow....
-
Next was the Doors.
Sanded them to fit properly and then spray them green.
Fitted perfectly. Once done I painted a black/brown wash over them to show some detail and to take away the gloss of the green paint.
-
From the pictures I found on the Internet, there is some stairs going up to the sloped deck which is used to pull the logs from the water.
There is also one on the dispatch side where the wood is packed on train or other transport.
So, where do I find anything, so why not just make it
I took the 3 layer ply and split it into the 3 layers, so now I have 0.5mm think wood to work with.
I cut all the sections as best I could and glue it all together.
I followed the same process for the ladders on the slopped deck.
Last picture is just to show you all how small this really are.
-
Now this Project is really starting to get to the final stages.
I need to add the pown pipes for the Gutters.
I had some 1mm Styrine, but that does not really work and it is way to bulky.
So I thought what about Solder Wire. The one I use is 0.7mm and it is easy to bend and it really looks good.
So I made them all, glues them in place and painted them grey as per the pictures I found.
-
Last little detail for the build, the main doors !!!!!
Painted and fitted.....
I also added the pillars on the separate building.
-
And so this project also came to a end....
There is still some small things to add once it go on the the layout, but for now this is done.
I love it and I'm really happy with the way it turned out.
Thank you for all the comments and following along with the build.
Cheers,
Evert

Well done! And this didn't take all that long considering all the other items you are busy with... :thumb:
-
Wow,
well done, that sawmill looks fantastic. :thumb:
-
Good Morning All,
So I have entered my SawMill for a competition
This means that I had to build a base to make it presentable.
This is what I have done this week.
I took two thin pieces of Styrofoam and cut the top one for the profile for the lake.
Then I covered everything with a thin layer of CreatStone and Woodglue mixture. (very thin layer, woodglue will prevent it from cracking)
Then I painted it earth brown and added grass and ground cover.
A section of track was added and I cut some wood strips to cover the sleepers.
I have also finished painting the water, still have to add the resin water (will have a dark brown tint in)
Bushes and trees and a few other details must still be added. Should be finished by the ens of the weekend
Enjoy the pictures.
Regards,
Evert.
-
Hi Evert,
that looks very interesting.
Love that last photo. :thumb:
-
:thumb:
Drought there I see....
-
Good Morning All,
So I worked a little bit more over the weekend.
Added a few trees and bushes around the Sawmill.
I also added some detail - sawdust and some stacked timber as well as some off-cuts or wood that needs to be sorted out.
Think it is starting to look very nice now.
Enjoy the Pictures.
Cheers,
Evert
-
Morning Evert,
taking shape very nicely. :thumb:
Those logs in the water, are they staying there?
-
Those logs in the water, are they staying there?
I will have to make them little shorter, but the idea is to have some logs in the water yes.
I want to do something like the picture below.
Regards.
-
Good Morning All.....
OK, so the water......
I normally use the WoodlandScenics Realistic water, but at almost R500 per bottle I do not think so :(
Resin
I wanted to tint the water brown as wood colour the water brown in real life too.
So I added some colour to the resin, I tested it and it looks OK, but when I poured it it came out a little bit to solid.
But it is what it is, I'll make it much lighter on my actual layout.
I have also added the frame around it.
Next I have to paint it black and add some ripples to the water.
Then this is pretty much finished.
Enjoy the pictures.
Regards,
Evert.
-
That's a very muddy river. :thumb:
-
I think you should not add any tint to the resin. The colour you did up front on the "ground level" of the dame would have been enough and the resin also add a little light brown colour to it. Before you do your layout, first experiment with it as clear. I think it will be enough.
-
Regarding your base for you sawmill, just need to wrap it with little planks and paint it black.
Done.
-
Good Morning All,
And I think this is complete now  :howzit:
What an awesome project. I'm really happy with the way it turned out.
Last night I added the some more details and finishes. The sawdust with the cover half pulled open and the two guys working.
I also created and printed the date plate. (Pic05)
I added a rope to the log that is busy getting pulled in for cutting.
What an awesome journey and learned so much.
I also have to say thank you to Arno for the Laser cutting and Neil for the 3D Printing :thumb:
Enjoy the last few pictures.
Regards,
Evert
-
Stunning. :thumb:
Love the small details like the canvas sails on the wind-wheel that
are all slightly different.
-
Crazy! :eek2:
But nice! :thumb: :innocent:

Stunning, well done! :thumb: :thumb:
