Hi,
I can't get this motor going (O scale). I see there's a coil that needs power to make the fixed plates become a magnet. I put 6V to the coil and 9 and 18V DC to the rotor but nothing.
Is it a good idea to replace it with a new DC motor? It is an old Lionel diesel engine Santa Fe 8020.
I'am a retired mech eng and this is new an unknown territory to me.
Many thks,
George

Another view (Ed pse rectify the size again :))

That looks like an AC motor.
Similar to the old Märklin motors, will most properly work with a Märklin transformer.

Oops.
Then I'am forced to fit a nice DC motor - oh well, another challenge awaits :)

Thks C.
I quickly checked with Youtube and found a video to make an AC motor run with DC. Simply wire the stator and armature in parallel and voila it worked. It will only work with 6V and is very slow.
I'll keep on learning and finding a way to up the speed and also get it to go fwd and reverse. Any suggestions?
