Title: Trix Pizza Layout
Post by: LooVille on February 16, 2017, 09:05:06 AM
Good Morning All.....

So my Dad bought the Trix Track that Ed had for sale a while back.
We are going to build this very interesting layout.

My dad is busy building the bench work at the moment.
First he built a frame out of off-cut Chipboard. (this is just a frame and will be removed)
Currently he is gluing ten layers of about 1.5mm to 2mm Ply against the frame. (1 layer per day)  :thumb:
Then once that is done he will make a 20mm frame to fit on the inside to keep it sturdy.

The Trix track is layed out on the dining room table with the correct heights, so my dad can work out the tunnels and building spacing's.

Here is some pictures of the progress so far.

Cheers,
Evert (LooVille)

Good Morning All......

So I think it is time for a update
My dad is creating a masterpiece again......

So, the circle is done and the frame is taken oot.
My dad sanded it nicely.
Then he clued a strip about 20mm (enough space so that the Styrofoam base can fit inside the circular fascia) on the inside and braced it.
He also made spaces in the bracing for the wiring.

Then my dad cut out a rectangular piece which will become the front of the control panel.
Next step is to build the control panel, it will be on a push to open slider, so no handles.

I was quite amazed when I saw this last night. Very impressive.

Here is so pictures.

Good Morning All.

Small Update from my Dad.
He finished sanding the facia as well as the drawer.
He also rounded the top edge of the facia.
And he finished building the drawer, I gave him a piece of Milky Perspex, so we will get is engraved, same as mine.

Then he varnished the facia, looks awesome :)
Here is some more pictures.

Enjoy  :thumb:

Hi Evert,

Great to see the results of a craftsman's work, looking really good.  It seems as if your dad used a thin plywood to laminate the fascia ?

Hi Steve,

Yes 2mm Meranti Ply.
He glued 10 sheets to make a 20mm thick facia.

Good Morning All,

Everything is going a bit slow, but that is not a bad thing  :)
My dad have finished the bench-work and he glued in a sheet of Styrofoam for the base. He wants to put cork on that and then the track.

But before he can do that he needs to get the tunnels and bridges sorted out.
Because the rand dollar and imports is so incredibly expensive he decided to scratch build the bridge.

Here is some pictures of the bridge. Still loads to do, but I think it is starting to look quite good  :thumb:

Cheers and speak again.

Good Morning All,

So my dad is busy building his own bridge, according to a Kibri kit he saw on the Internet.
Comming along slowly, but will look awesome.

The cardboard sections and the white will be painted a concrete colour.

Almost done  :thumb:

The cardboard sections and the white will be painted a concrete colour.

Looking very nice, just remember that what is now white should be done in the same stone work as the
rest of the bridge.
Concrete is wrong there.

Good Morning All,

My dad did quite a bit of work the past week and managed to put the track on the benchwork  :thumb: (NOT fitted yet, just testing)
He also used the Woodland Scenics inclines I used and it looks awesome. Tunnels, inclines, bridge all works perfectly.

Here is a few pictures.
Next step will be to glue all the inclines on to the base and start to fit the track.

Enjoy, Cheers,
Evert

Good Morning All,

So, it's been quiet for a bit, but my dad was working on the wiring and also filling all the gaps the Woodland Scenics risers make. Most of the feeder wires are in. The wires is soldered to the bottom of the Fish-plates. With Trix track, the Fish-plates clip on, so good option to do that. Tunnels is finished painted as well as the first light is in.

Enjoy the pictures.
Cheers,
Evert

Good Morning All,

Detail is starting to come in and everything is looking stunning.
My dad finished all the tunnel lights and is busy painting a reddish brown earth colour underneath all the track.
Once that is done he will balast. Did the one tunnel section just as a test. Looks quite good I think.

Here is some pictures again.

Cheers,
Evert.

Good Morning All,

So here is a little bit more progress my dad made in the past two weeks or so.
While he was busy with the ballasting of the track inside the tunnels he realized that the point motors that is situated under the track causes a problem for the ballast. If you would glue the ballast you risk damaging the point motor. So I suggested we take the track out and ballast it separately on a piece of plastic. Wow, it worked  :thumb:

Here is some more pictures.
First one is the upside down point motor under the track.
Second one is the track that was ballasted separately.

Cheers,
Evert

Good Morning All,

My dad was very busy with the electrical work the past few weeks, next step is to get the control panel made and all the switches and wiring installed for that.
So all the track and the point motors is done now.
The lights in the tunnels is also done.

Picture 1 is the back of the control panel drawer.

Here is some pictures.
Cheers and speak again.

Good Morning All,

It's been a while, but my dad is waiting for stuff. But atleast he can take the time to run some trains
He finally received his control panel. Same idea as mine, milky perspex with everything engraved.

He also had holes cut so that the controller as well as the 12V for the lights can just be plugged in. He also made it so that a DCC controller can be plugged in.
Next he will paint the text black and then all the LEDS and switches will be fitted and all the wiring.

Here is some pictures of the panel.

Enjoy.
Regards,
Evert
