Hi Guys,
seeing that I'm busy with other things in life and can't work on my current layout I thought that I will post some photo's of my previous layout.
Started this in about 1986 and broke it up in 1995.
Started out with only M track on a chip board 2.8 x 1.8 meters.
Plan was drawn by hand with pencil, rulers and erasures.
Photo's all lack a bit of quality as I took them from old prints.
First photo is how it all started, laid out the track on the board and ran a few trains.
Next photo its starting to take shape. Even some light working already.
I love night shots.

A photo from behind and high up.
Take note of the red BR 216 diesel coming into the station, growing up I was always very keen on this Loco, but somehow never got one. One fine Saturday I walked into Mike Trow's shop and there was a new one in the shelf. R. 259,00 and I only had a hundred rand in my pocket. :-[
Well after chatting to Mike he kindly agreed to let me pay it off, R. 100.00 down, next month another 100 and the last month the rest and then I can take her home. :thumb: That's how she came onto my layout and is still in my collection.
The beige and red BR 103 electric was a Christmas present from my Grandmother.
Mountains staring to take shape.
Take note of my first attempt at building a control panel, bottom right hand corner. It worked, but those that have seen Wolfgang's layout in Rooi Els will agree that my design has somewhat improved over the years.

I wanted a lake and waterfall on my layout, water was also meant to run over a Faller water mill. So I set about building the lake with class fibre and the little mountain as well, my plan was to use a cars windscreen washer pump to circulate the water.
I ended filling the lake only once with water, what a mess, due to capillary action the water crept out and all over the layout. Never again. ::)
I got bored with the straight layout and decided to extent it into an L shape. First try out to see for fit.
Final L extension, still with M track, the mainline was later converted to K track which looked so much nicer.

When I designed the layout I gave no thought how I would one day work on the middle of the main board, so I cut out the centre section and put in some extra supports and frame work so that I could remove the complete town scene with station. Made life a lot easier.
Here is a photo of when I had just cut it out.
Finally a little detail scene under the bridge, I was particularly happy the way this part turned out.
One more from the other side.
I still have more photo's, but can't find them now.
Why did I break up this layout completely, well not knowing better at the time I used the sharpest turns that you could get, so with time the layout, although I had lots of pleasure from it and fun building would just not keep me happy.
Hope that you enjoyed my layout memories. :thumb:
Cheers.

Good memories these...

It's also nice if you still have the Locomotives and rolling stock. Fortunately my late Dad taught me how to look after your collection. Everything is still going. ;D

Very true, I still have everything besides one Italian Loco which did not fit into my collection and a few of the tin plate passenger coaches.
I also sold the Faller Station building as it was very under scale, I think it would have been better suited to TT scale. ::)

Never throw out the old stuff. My Dads' castle going back to 1965 found its way onto the layout.
